Valentine’s Day 2024: The Best Romantic Anime Series of All Time

Best Romantic Anime Series of All Time: Making a list of the best romance anime of all time is harder than it looks as there are so many great shows that literally made us believe in love. Hence, obviously, many will not agree to my choices and might even feel offended that their favorite is not here.

But well, I definitely can not incorporate everything and hence have crafted a list based on entirely what I and a majority believe to be some of the greatest romance anime ever. So, here is a list of anime you must check out with your beloved, this Valentine’s Day.

The Best Romantic Anime Series of All Time

Hana Yori Dango

Valentine's Day 2024 The Best Romantic Anime Series of All Time

Hana Yori Dango stakes its claim as the best romance anime of all time because of its sheer impact in the romance sector. It influenced not just an anime series, but many live-action adaptations, movies, etc, that too in multiple languages. The most famous one is definitely Boys Over Flowers ( South Korean version).

Here, we see a tale of love surpassing societal boundaries, as Tsukushi Makino and Tsukasa Domyoji, our couple, come from different financial backgrounds.

Seamlessly blending heartwarming romance with gripping drama, this anime keeps viewers hooked with its storyline and character growth. In essence, Hana Yori Dango stands as a timeless gem, and even though it has many cliched moments, it can still make your heart skip a beat.

Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama!

Valentine's Day 2024 The Best Romantic Anime Series of All Time

Misaki, the fiery student council president of a former boys’ school, hides a secret life as a maid. But, tragedy strikes, when the popular, seemingly perfect Usui discovers her double life. Hence, starts a rom-com where the dynamic of these two explodes in a mix of comedic chaos and genuine sweetness.

Beyond the “Enemies to Lovers” trope, Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama! attracts its audience for its relatable characters. We see how Misaki’s fierce determination masks her vulnerability, and we come to understand her uncertain heart.

And as to why this anime should be on this list? Well, ask any 2000s Shoujo fan about their first love, and you’ll know about the hold Usui had (still has) on us.

Clannad Series

Valentine's Day 2024 The Best Romantic Anime Series of All Time

The Clannad series is widely regarded as one of the best romance anime of all time, and for good reason. In this anime, you find love in all its forms, from familial bonds to romantic connections.

At its core, it tells the journey of Tomoya Okazaki, a cynical loner, who encounters Nagisa Furukawa. She is a fragile yet determined girl harboring a dream to revive the school’s drama club.

Their unlikely bond blossoms as they tackle challenges alongside a bright cast of characters, each grappling with their own personal struggles. But, pro tip, prepare tissues cause you will need them for the After Story series.

Toradora!

Toradora! isn’t just another high school rom-com, nope, it’s a masterclass in emotional storytelling wrapped in hilarious shenanigans. The unlikely pairing of the sweet-faced delinquent Taiga and the kind-hearted tough guy Ryuji takes us on a journey that’s far more than just your everyday romance.

But that’s not all, here, you also get complex characters, each harboring complicated emotions beneath their cheerful self. And the best part about this show? The fact that its exploration of self-discovery and lifelong friendships extends beyond the central pair. From the stoic Ami’s hidden insecurities to the bubbly Minori’s selfless devotion, we see it all.

Your Lie In April

Your Lie In April earns its place as one of the greatest romance anime through its deeply emotional storytelling. With Kousei Arima and his relationship with the enigmatic Kaori Miyazono, the anime navigates the complexities of young love and the power of music.

Its stunning animation and majestic soundtrack elevate the emotional impact of every scene. You will literally immerse yourself in a world of beauty and tragedy.

Also, the anime’s bittersweet ending, while heartbreaking, leaves a lasting impact on the viewers.

Kimi ni Todoke

This anime is about a misunderstood horror movie lookalike. Meet Sawako, nicknamed “Sadako” for her uncanny resemblance to the creepy movie character from the Ring franchise. Though she might look like that, Sawako is a sweet introverted girl, who is just a loner.

Shy and misunderstood, she yearns for friends, and that’s where Shouta comes in like a ray of sunshine. Unlike other typical heroes of shoujo stories, Shouta sees Sawako for who she truly is – kind, funny, and full of potential.

Their romance doesn’t follow a predictable script as it develops organically, fueled by understanding, and genuine respect.

Fruits Basket

Fruits Basket has its fair share of blushing moments and heartwarming confessions, but at its core, it’s a story about healing, family, and bonds.

While Tohru’s relationships with Kyo and Yuki are central to the narrative, Fruits Basket is more than just a love triangle. It delves into the complex dynamics of the entire Sohma family. We explore their individual struggles, hidden secrets, and the generational trauma that binds them.
