The Great Flood Ending Explained
The series opens with An-na’s somewhat ordinary life turned upside down when the incessant rainfalls plaguing the world turn into a huge tsunami of water that drowns Seoul in one go. An-na and her son, Ja-in, are almost swept away when a mysterious Hee-jo saves them and takes them to safety. He informs her that what they are seeing is something Earth cannot come back from, and it all depends on her to save humanity, or they are doomed.
It ties back to her work in the AI research lab surrounding something called the Emotion Engine, but at first, we see situation after situation of her trying to find Ja-in, but unable to get to him in time.

Who are Ja-in and An-na?
Throughout the runtime of the film, we see An-na repeating this cycle of trying to find Ja-in, but finding herself back in the apartment complex over and over again as she constantly dies and starts over. Eventually, we learn that all of this was an experiment that An-na herself created at her work after the Earth was destroyed by a flood, and she, as a researcher, put herself up as the test subject to repopulate Earth.

The original Ja-in was created to simulate human emotions and store them in a baby that An-na took care of and grew attached to. Thus, when the flood happened, and they had to kill Ja-in to get the information stored in him, she was taken off the planet for repopulation. Unfortunately, her ship was hit by the meteor debris that stabbed her, and she volunteered to become the test subject to create a mother to take care of the child (Ja-in).
This is because she was guilty of abandoning him, even though she knew that this would happen one day; she refused to abandon him in the end because she loved him as her own.
What happens in the end?

In the end, An-na fights against everything to reunite with Ja-in, both having retained information from their previous experience in the simulation. They eventually end up together in the experiment, growing and loving each other even though they physically don’t exist anymore.
