Carter (2022) Ending Explained: Does He Get Back His Memories and Escape? Will There Be a Sequel?

Carter is a South Korean action movie that has been exciting fans since the release of its trailer. Starring the Good Doctor actor Joo Won in the lead role along with Lee Sun-jae, Kim Bo-min, alongside other cast members, the movie premiered on August 5, 2022.

The story of Carter revolves around the agent of the same name who wakes up in a motel room with no recollection of his identity or his past. The only thing he knows is the instructions given by a voice that takes him on a dangerous mission to rescue a girl. If he doesn’t follow through with the orders then there’s only death awaiting this agent.

Netflix’s synopsis read:

A MAN WAKES UP MISSING HIS MEMORIES. DIRECTED BY A MYSTERIOUS VOICE FROM A DEVICE IN HIS EAR, HE SETS OFF ON A HOSTAGE RESCUE MISSION RIFE WITH DANGER.

Carter (2022) Ending Explained

As the movie goes toward the end, Carter Lee helps Dr Jung, his daughter Ha-na, the female officer and his alleged daughter Yoon-hee escape the North Korean laboratory. On the way, the female officer played by Jeong So-ri, tells the doctor to help Lee recover his memories by removing the device that has blocked his memories.

Upon recovering his memories he remembers that So-ri is his wife and Yoon-hee is their daughter. They were told that they could leave the country if he succeeds in his mission but the head of the coup who wants to rebel against the current government doesn’t let them go.

The group choose to escape on the train that is going to China while the head of the coup chases them which gives us some intense action and dizzying camera work. Lee, after jumping from helicopter to helicopter and also destroying them on the way, soon reaches the coup’s head who laughs at him. He asks Lee if he really believes in the memories that he has just gained.

Lee ignores him and jumps back into the train where the group reunite and leaves. Yoon-hee finally opens her eyes and asks where they are going. As the scene zooms out and we think that it is a happy ending for the group, the train goes onto a bridge but a sudden explosion creates a gap right in front of the engine. The movie ends there.

We don’t know what will happen to the group, did they really die after the effort that they put into their escape? This answer is unknown just like the many others that have popped up in our heads during the movie.

The movie started with a mystery and ended with more mysteries. While the action that was seen was unrealistic and disappointing, the storyline made it a little better to watch.

Will there be a Second Movie?

With the way in which Carter has ended, we can guess that there is a possibility for a sequel. However, this also depends on how well the movie performs. The movie has definitely left room for a second part, but the disappointing reviews may not let that happen.

But, if there is a second part then we can hope that it would answer the many questions that have come up during this movie. What happens to the group when the train gets into an accident?

And who is Carter? Is he really what his memories have shown or is he the CIA agent Michael Bane? Will the people be cured of the DMZ virus? Where will the group escape to this time?

There are many unanswered questions and they can only be answered if the movie gets a sequel. If it does get renewed then I do hope that the action scenes are better than what they’ve shown in this movie.

Watch Carter on Netflix.
