This is Us Season 6 Episode 2 Recap: One Giant Leap and Awkward Meal

This is Us Season 6 Episode 2, titled ‘One Giant Leap’, is now out on Disney+. Directed by Kay Oyegun, Kevin Falls wrote the 43 minutes episode. The latest episode features Mandy Moore (Rebecca), Milo Ventimiglia (Jack), Jon Huertas (Miguel), Griffin Dunne (Nicky), Lyric Ross (Deja), Asante Blackk (Malik), and Dey Young. The episode brings a big smile to everyone’s face.

The synopsis reads, “Nicky, Rebecca and Miguel go on a road trip.”

In This is Us Season 6 Episode 2, Deja travels to Massachusetts to meet Malik who’s studying at Harvard. The meeting turns awkward in the beginning when she sees Jennifer, the mother of Malik’s daughter Janelle. Jennifer seems to be in a bad mood and barely greets Deja. When she leaves, Malik shares with his girlfriend how stressful it is to take care of Janelle, tolerate Jennifer and handle all the assignments at Harvard. He needs an hour to complete his university work. “Take two,” says Deja with a smile.

Later, Deja wears a gorgeous red dress. Malik pulls of a Randall and calls her incandescent. The two head out to a dance club. After dancing for a while, Deja suggests they go back to the room, hinting that she’s ready to take the big step in their relationship. Considering it’s their first time, there’s a bit of awkwardness. The duo shares an intimate night and expresses their love for each other.

The next morning, Deja heads back home. While she is on the bus, Randall texts her, ‘How was the breakfast at Tifanny’s?’ It Turns out Deja told Randall and Beth that she is going for an overnight stay at her friend Tiffany’s house. We wonder what will happen when Randall finds out Deja secretly met Malik.

Disney+ This is Us Season 6 Episode 2 simultaneously showed us what’s happening with Rebecca, Miguel and Nicky. After teasing us for an entire season, Nicky finally meets his lost love Sally in California. They all take the road to meet Sally. In the car, they listen to Blue Swede’s ‘Hooked on a Feeling’ and sing along. Rebecca reminisces the days when she sang the same song aloud in a car with Jack.

Nicky says that Sally loved clicking pictures. On the way, he stops at a store that sells vintage stuff. Nicky wants to buy a vintage camera for the girl he fell for in the 1970s. However, he isn’t happy with its high price. Uncle Nicky also starts doubting the entire plan of meeting someone who’s been out of touch for decades.

Rebecca and Miguel calm Nicky down and encourage him to meet Sally. Actor Dey Young plays Sally, who has a hard time remembering Nicky. He reminds her of how they met and spent time together. Sally finally recollects the memories and invite them all for dinner. All of Nicky’s hopes come crumbling down when we find out that Sally’s married to a man named Eric. Sally, Eric, Nicky, Rebecca and Miguel have dinner together.

At the dinner table, Sally again asks Nicky about how their meeting. Nicky says, “You deflowered me under a moon that men had just walked on.” Again, Sally remembers everything and cracks an ‘early Alzheimer’ joke. Her jokes don’t sit well with Rebecca, who shares that she has Alzheimer’s. Rebecca keeps talking about how she keeps forgetting things every day and wonders what will be the last thing she’ll forget and remember till her last breath. Sally apologises to Rebecca.

Nicky further talks about the time he spends thinking about Sally. Her husband Eric cracks a joke suddenly, which triggers her. Sally gives it back to her husband. In just a few minutes, the entire dinner conversation becomes awkward. When Sally walks away, Rebecca follows to comfort her. Together, they talk about their youth, how they were loved and turning old. Rebecca shares how Jack got the best version of her and Miguel didn’t. Sally says she had stopped taking pictures because of she felt about herself.

The women have some heartfelt conversation until Nicky interrupts. Later, Nicky sees a picture board in Sally’s room. He notices that Sally had pinned his pic when they met decades ago. While saying goodbye, the duo joke about seeing each other after 50 years. Rebecca apologises to Miguel in the car as he has to handle a lot while being with her. Miguel reminds her of his wedding vows. He gifts her a vintage brooch he bought from the same antic store. The duo shares an emotional moment and kiss.

At the end of the episode, Nicky shows acceptance towards Miguel and Rebecca’s relationship. He says that Jack would’ve wanted them to be together. He also decides to go back to his Caravan and stay with Kevin. Nicky meets a flight attendant Edie (Vanessa Bell Calloway), on the flight. Turns out the woman everyone’s been waiting for in future when Rebecca is in critical condition is Edie. It’s not Sally but Edie who becomes Nicky’s love interest.

This is Us Season 6 Episode 2 Review: Final Thoughts

The latest episode was full of love, sweet moments and little joys. It gave closure to Nicky’s story with Sally. After waiting so long, we finally saw Rebecca acknowledging Miguel and what he meant to her. Deja and Malik are cute together. But we wonder what will happen when Randall and Beth find out she lied to them.

The episode is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
