Netflix Film How I Fell in Love with a Gangster Review Contains No Spoilers

The film starts with a young woman in a bathtub with the water turning red due to blood. The camera focuses on her as she struggles, and the song ‘Big in Japan’ plays in the background. The scene cuts and we see a young male journalist talking to a mysterious older woman. The older woman was one of the many women with whom Nikoś had an affair. She doesn’t agree that her former lover was a gangster.

In the 3 hours of Netflix film How I Fell in Love With a Gangster, we see how the strict upbringing pushes young Nikoś to take a wrong path to earn money. He witnesses a man earn money by deceiving people by exchanging currency. For quite some time, Nikoś made a reputation as the best in making money with exchange currency. Eventually, he started making a fortune by stealing cars from Germany and importing them to Poland.

Nikoś was rapidly successful, having amassed a large fortune, built a vehicle empire, and was also the best in the market. He had a reputation for being a big player among ladies. As his friend Fomo says that the gangster always had girls around him. From his first wife to his multiple affairs and relationships, Krzysztof Gureczny and Maciej Kawulski give us a peek into his “happening love life”. From the 1960s until the 1980s, the film depicts the rise and fall of the gangster. The downfall had a hard impact on everyone around him.

How I Fell in Love With a Gangster Still

Films or shows about gangsters usually have a serious tone with lots of violence. Director Maciej decided to change our perceptions of a gangster drama. His characters(except Nikoś) break the fourth fall. It happens suddenly, and the characters, for the most part, have amusing things to say.

The director and writer waste no time to introduce us to Nikoś and how he became the king or the tiger, as he calls himself. Similarly, they take no time to show the multiple affairs and women he dated in his life. Now that’s where the story bothers you. The title is ‘How I Fell in Love With a Gangster’. But his relationships are rushed, and there’s little passion with every woman he dates. You are more engrossed in watching his gangster side where he steals cars, makes them look new and makes loads of money out of it.

The narrative is light and easy to grasp despite moving quite fast. It is hilarious that the narrative feels fast when the film is 3 hours long. That only proves how “happening” the gangster made his life with his illicit activities. There are many songs used in the Polish gangster drama. The choice of songs is amazing, whether it’s Big in Japan or Kishore Kumar’s Ae Oh Aa Zara Mudke.

How I Fell in Love with a Gangster Review: The Rise and Fall of Poland's One of the Biggest Gangsters

Actor Tomasz Wlosok has owned the character of Nikodem ‘Nikoś’ Skotarczak in the Polish film How I Fell in Love With a Gangster on Netflix. Tomasz is charming, funny and confident as Nikoś. He is irresistible to women and intimidating to his enemies. In the second half, Nikoś has to spend some time in the prison. When the gangster comes out of jail, he is a completely new person – physically and mentally. You take some time to accept that the man on screen is still Tomasz as him. Tomasz has delivered a remarkable performance throughout.

Actors Antoni Królikowski as Komo and Agnieszka Grochowska as Milena play key roles in the gangster’s life. The actors have played their part well. The rest of the ensemble cast also does a great job.

How I Fell in Love With a Gangster Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, How I Fell in Love With a Gangster is a fun and interesting watch. It has flaws, but you don’t get bored even for a minute. The mysterious woman who narrates the story says that how is Nikoś a gangster when the people who attended his funeral in the church were more than one can expect for any politician or a celebrity. When you watch the film, you sense the aura the gangster had. But at the end of the day, Nikoś was a criminal. He had to pay the price.

But who’s the woman narrating the entire story? That you will have to figure out.

The film is now streaming on Netflix.
