Society of the Snow Ending Explained: Were the Survivors Rescued? Did Numa Turcatti Make It Out Alive?

Society of the Snow Ending Explained: The newest Spanish survival thriller film, La Sociedad de la Nueve, is now out on Netflix as of January 4, 2024. Directed by JA Bayona, the movie is based on Pablo Vierci’s book of the same name that adapts the real-life events of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crash in the Andes mountains in 1972, commonly referred to as the Andes flight disaster or the Miracle of the Andes.

Starring Enzo Vogrincic Roldán as Numa Turcatti, Matías Recalt as Roberto Canessa, Agustín Pardella as Nando Parrado, Tomas Wolf as Gustavo Zerbino, Diego Vegezzi as Marcelo Pérez del Castillo, Esteban Kukuriczka as Adolfo and others, Bayona’s directorial was also filmed at the actual crash site. The plot finds its direction after a plane crashes in the remote environs of Andes with Old Christians Club rugby team players onboard. Ultimately, all survivors join forces for survival as they face the worst of the worst conditions nature has to offer.

Society of the Snow Ending Explained

The initial crash landing itself resulted in the quick death of many passengers including the crew members. Society of the Snow is projected from Numa Turcatti’s perspective as the plane experiences turbulence and dives straight into the snow. Over the days that pass after the crash, the isolated group of survivors is left to fend for themself in the extremely cold surroundings.

Were the Survivors Rescued?

Yes, the last remaining survivors find their way to safety in the end, all thanks to Nando and Roberto taking off and travelling to Chile. Initially these two, along with Tintin and Numa, headed east, but Numa couldn’t carry on with the expedition so he returned to their established base where the airplane wreckage had settled (more on that later) instead of continuing to find the plane’s tail.

The other three men finally chanced upon the other half of the ruins after a long journey through the snow, in hopes of recuperating more resources and electricity to somehow rewire the radio and make contact elsewhere. That search however ultimately went down the drain when the trio realised that not much was at their disposal and couldn’t be salvaged to assist their plans, they again set out for east. By this point in time, things got better than before as they could now brave a rather warmer climate as compared to the extreme conditions from earlier.

Roberto, Nando, and Tintin were even able to succeed at reaching the highest mountain range in sight, where for the first time sublimity inspired them with hope to keep the fight in them ignited. While Tintin eventually returned to their original spot from here, Roberto and Nando kept on with their journey, in their attempts to discovering any consequential help for their rescue mission. Crossing all the snow in their path, the duo finally reached a more rocky terrain where stumble upon a stream of fresh water.

Just as they’re rejoicing these findings, they also spot a man on a horse. They get to talking with him, and this man ultimately helps convey their word to the Uruguayan authorities. Thereafter, things get even easier and simpler as the rescue team gets in contact with Roberto and Nando, and they then bridge the gap between safe abode and the other survivors by bringing the rescue team to them. In the meantime, the others at the crash site hear about it all through the radio as they famously come to known as the miraculous survivors of this grave disaster.

The rest of the team buckles up and prepares to be rescued as they clean up their disheveled looks by using whatever meagre resource they have in hand. In the same breath, each one of them also carries back some mementos including the letters written by those who passed away before seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. When they get back, they’re all taken into care at the hospitals and recuperation centres, where they’re nursed back to health and studied. The physical and mental toll of the incident is evidently apparent as neither of could ever forget what went down in Andes for the past 72 days.

Although the rest of the world celebrates them as miracles, the survivors, much like how the final narration relays at the end, “they don’t feel like heroes”, because their minds and souls were still with the people they’d left behind in the snow despite having been physically rescued to safe grounds.

Did Numa Turcatti Make It Out Alive?

The entire story was narrated from Numa’s perspective, so without a doubt, he was perceived to be one of the prime characters of the movie. Even the rest of the passengers deeply cared for him, given that he was possibly one of the last people who’d forsaken his morality. When most of the other co-passengers had already resorted to cannibalism for their survival, he still stood his ground till it became practically impossible for him to keep it up. Moreover, the others persistently urged him to eat to stay alive too.

There’s a point in the film wherein the remaining passengers exchange silly rhymes based on their current situation to liven the mood. In that moment, for the first time in a long while, these people are provided with some sense of respite, until that too is snatched away from them in the next few moments as a heavy avalanche hits their standing ground. They’re all left buried under the colossal weight of these added snow layers, and many succumb to their fate.

With even more people’s lives erased by that catastrophic blow, Numa loses all calm and tries to come up to break one of the plane’s glasses in his vicinity. In that process, he hurts his foot, and considering the dire conditions they were dealing with, it’s no brainer that an inevitable infection soon started festering.

The severity of it didn’t hit him then, it only got worse when he had decided to head up east with three of his fellow mates. When the ankle’s infection exacerbates and becomes too hard to bear, he returns to the crash site, and in the subsequent days even he can sense that his death his near. Before bidding his final goodbye, he pens down a letter for the last survivors, which is read out loud as the final narration before the movie ends.

These words elucidate that despite all they’d been through, Numa had accepted his death and was at peace knowing that he was among friends in his last moments. Ultimately, the letter is all about these survivors having found a safe haven in each other’s company and how they helped keep each other alive to the best of their abilities.
