Harlan Coben’s Run Away Ending Explained

The series starts with Simon desperately running after his daughter, Paige, in Central Park. She’s a drug addict and has run away from home, and Simon has been desperately searching for him for months. Unfortunately, Paige seems uninterested in reconnecting with him and looks cagey and apprehensive about talking to him. As soon as he reaches her, her boyfriend, Aaron, intervenes, and the two get into a fist fight, which is recorded by people around them.

In the aftermath, Paige is nowhere to be found again, and Aaron has turned up dead the next day, resulting in Detectives Isaac Fagbenle and Ruby Todd suspecting Simon’s involvement, resulting in a desperate cat-and-mouse chase with shocking results. Meanwhile, Private Detective Elena Ravenscroft delves into the disappearance of Henry and finds a surprising connection with Paige.

Who killed Aaron and why?

Throughout the series, the question of Aaron’s murderer becomes a big topic, with several suspects all around. However, in the end, we learn in episode 8 that it was Ingrid who killed Aaron after she realised that Aaron was taking her daughter down into a pit of despair with her.

At first, the series weaves the narrative that a cult called The Shining Truth was after Aaron’s murder, after Elena and Simon figure out that the leader, Casper Vartage, was using Dee Dee and Ash to kill all of his illegitimate children and keep his predatory behaviour under wraps. While that’s what he was doing, Aaron was not killed by the cult.

Why did Paige disappear?

Paige didn’t disappear. After Aaron supposedly hurt him, Ingrid helped her go to rehab, one that she had gone to years ago, and get clean while she got rid of Aaron. When Paige returned to the flat and saw Aaron’s dead body, she was left heartbroken and shocked and decided to go to rehab as instructed, after finally having rid of the man who was constantly keeping her addicted.

What was the Greene family secret?

In a shocking twist, Simon realises towards the end of season 8 that Paige hadn’t told her the entire truth. The heartbreaking truth of the situation is that Aaron was actually Ingrid’s son, and Aaron and Paige were half-siblings. Aaron’s father was Casper, and was conceived when Ingrid was in the cult as well, years ago. Paige got to know about this when she took an ancestry test and was left completely shocked when she saw everything.

She got in touch with Aaron, who got close to her, hoping to find familiar bonds. But, having been abused all his life, he wanted to keep Paige with him at whatever cost and maybe to even punish Ingrid for abandoning him as an infant. The truth leaves Simon completely broken; however, he puts up a brave face for his family’s happiness.
