House of the Dragon Episode 9 Review: Bend the Knee to the Green Council

House of the Dragon Episode 9 is titled ‘The Green Council’ and has a runtime of about 58 minutes long. The episode will follow the series of events that will take place after the death of King Viserys I and what repercussions will come after the misunderstanding of his last words about the successor.

Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, this epic series tells the story of House Targaryen. Starring Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, Olivia Cooke as Queen Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Carney as Prince Aegon Targaryen, and Ewan Mitchell as Prince Aemond Targaryen.

In the last episode, the succession of Driftmark was brought forward to the King’s Landing where Ser Vaemond Velaryon finds himself possibly in line to inherit the throne. But when his petition goes completely sideways for him, and his desperate attempt leads right into the midst of the contentious issue of Rhaenyra’s children and their real father, to challenge Lucerys. However, his bitter truth gets his head beheaded by Prince Daemon.

Another significant event in the last episode was the last supper of the family, where Viserys tried to bring his whole family together. And later that night on his deathbed, Viserys talks about the Song of Ice and Fire and Aegon’s dream, thinking he is talking to Rhaenyra.

Except its Alicent and she picks out words like “Aegon” and “prince who was promised” and “prophecy” and doesn’t understand all the context going back into it because she never heard the Song, as she was never his heir.

The latest episode follows this misunderstanding and solidifies the King’s last words even more after his death. As the episode title suggests, the green council points at the house of Hightower, since Alicent and Ser Otto are running the council and the Kingdom. The news of the King’s death is kept a secret until they strategies their future plans and whom to make the next ruler.

Compared to the last episode, where we saw almost all of the cast on the screen, the new episode only follows what’s happening in the King’s landing and what the people inside the court, as well as the civilians, are going through. While Alicent is in a dilemma of whether to honour her husband’s last wish or to go against Rhaenyra.

Otto Hightower has it all planned since he must have thought about it numerous times, even before Viserys’ death. Alicent might not agree with his ways but reluctantly she is following whatever he has in mind, be it treason towards House Targaryen. It’s also interesting to see how her relationship has evolved with both Lord Larys and Ser Criston Cole. Will any of them become her suitor?

Summing Up: House of the Dragon Episode 9

It might be after Jon Snow’s King in the North episode that a person is so reluctant to become a King. However, Jon’s episode was in all seriousness, Aegon’s fiasco almost feels like a comedy. From finding him in all of the flea bottom to dragging him to the Iron throne; give the poor Prince his peace and let him live his life of leisure.

We didn’t see anything about Dragonstone and what Rhaenyra and Daemon are up to, but considering Ser Otto, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them captured and prisoned somewhere, in the season finale. The next episode will be the final episode of the series and it’s needless to say it will be full of action and lots of blood spilling.

After a brief glimpse of Mysaria again in the last episode, we saw more of her and what she is up to in this episode. We have seen her before with Prince Daemon, but whether is she still connected with him or not, is not certain. If she is, then the news of the King’s death must have reached him already and a big fight is coming for the new King.

House of the Dragon is released on HBO at 6 PM PT and HBO Max at 9 PM ET every Sunday. It is also streaming on Disney+ Hotstar for Indian viewers and is released at 6:30 AM IST every Monday.
