House of the Dragon Episode 9 Preview: The Wrong Prince Who Was Promised

House of the Dragon Episode 9 Preview starts off with the heaviest words of the series, “The King is dead.” The premiere of the latest episode titled ‘The Lord of the Tides’, with a runtime of about 1 hour and 8 minutes; followed six years later. With the Driftmark succession suddenly critical, Rhaenyra attempts to strike a bargain with Rhaenys.

It is directed by Geeta Vasant Patel, and the teleplay is written by Ellen Shim. In the episode, we saw that Corlys has been potentially fatally wounded. Nobody knows whether or not he’s going to survive. So there’s now a question mark about who’s going to take on the Driftmark throne. Here Ser Vaemond Velaryon finds himself possibly in line to inherit the throne.

But when his petition in the King’s Landing goes completely sideways for him, he knows he’s gonna fall on his sword. And in a desperate attempt, he walks right into the midst of the contentious issue of Rhaenyra’s children and their real father, to challenge Lucerys. But his bitter truth gets his head beheaded by Prince Daemon.

Another significant event in the episode is the Last Supper, it’s Viserys’ last stand. He urges his family to unite together, and for a moment we think that maybe everything will be fine until Viserys leaves the room. For a moment we see the grown-up Alicent and Rhaenyra making amends and bonding but the young kids, kick it off again.

On his deathbed, Viserys talks about the Song of Ice and Fire and Aegon’s dream, thinking he is talking to Rhaenyra. Except its Alicent and she picks out words like “Aegon” and “prince who was promised” and “prophecy” and doesn’t understand all the context going back into it
because she never heard the Song, as she was never his heir.

In the preview, we see that the Hightowers misinterpret it as the King’s last wish and start to plan something that would not sit well with the remaining Targaryens. As we hear the maester say, “This is seizure! It is treason at the least!” This might also create tension in the Hightower family as well since Aemond is much more determined than Aegon to sit on the throne.

The preview ends with Rhaenys Targaryen asking someone, “Have you never imagined yourself on the Iron Throne?” As the throne is placed on a cushion and stays there without an owner.
