However, over the years, various good and bad movies have been produced, giving every era its equivalent theme.

Here, we will look at some of the Tamil comedy movies, old and new, which will forever make us laugh our arse out!

10 Best Tamil Comedy Movies to Watch During New Year’s Weekend

Avvai Shanmugi (1996)

Starting off with one of the classic Tamil comedy movies, Avvai Shanmugi will be the flavour of fun during New Year’s weekend. Starring Kamal Hassan, Meena and other big South Indian stars, Avvai Shanmugi is a revamp of the English movie Mrs Doubtfire. As usual, Kamal Hassan pleases the audience with his extraordinary acting. O blimey! The way he shifts his accents to delve into the character is mind-blowing. You can easily watch this classic on Netflix.

Soodhu Kavvum (2013)

Man, I miss these sorts of original movies that seem super wacky and fresh. Our makkal selva Vijay Sethupathy aced this movie as a cynical bad guy. The soundtrack by Santhosh Narayanan, to date, stands as one of the finest BGM for the protagonists’ entry. Soodhu Kavvum is all about a team of thieves who try to swindle money by kidnapping people. While the plot might seem disturbing, the entire movie is hilarious. Stream Soodhu Kavvum on Zee5.

Panchatanthiram (2002)

Every South Indian would know Panchatanthiram movie because it literally bags actors from every corner of South India. Starring Kamal Hassan, Jayaram, Yugi Sethu, K.S Ravikumar, Simran, Ramya Krishnan, Sriman, Ramesh Aravind and other famous actors, Panchatanthiram is about a group of friends who try to escape from the murder they didn’t commit. Amidst this rampage, one of the leads gets into trouble with a woman, leading his marriage to break. The entire movie has a lot going on, and be ready to laugh out loud. The movie is streaming on Zee5.

Comali (2019)

One of the latest blockbuster movies and a comeback for actor Jayam Ravi is the comedy flick Comali, which literally translates to clown. Comali is a movie about a young teenager who wakes up 30 years after a coma. As soon as he realizes how old is he, he struggles to fit in the modern era, with technologies all around him. Unable to fit in, he finds a way to live, and that is to retrieve his family’s ancient souvenir. You can enjoy this film on Disney+ Hotstar.

Thamizh Padam (2010)

The first edition of Thamizh Padam was a ride! Starring Siva, the film is a parody of every famous Tamil film combined together. The acting is so bad that it is so good. The dialogues are so dumb that it is so hilarious. Honestly, Thamizh Padam was a huge hit due to the unusual plot it came up with. It, in fact, has almost 80% plagiarism, yet it won the hearts of the Tamil people. Thamizh Padam part 2 was also a blast, but there’s something super good about the first part. You can watch this movie on Amazon Prime Video.

Yaamirukka Bayamey (2014)

I personally think this movie didn’t receive the appreciation it deserved. The movie consisted of underrated artists with a massive good plot. It is a comedy horror that shows the mysteries of a resort. The comedy dialogues were really good, and there weren’t any unnecessary characters in the movie. Overall, if you wish to have some jumpscares and balance the horror with some fun, Yaamirukka Bayamey is the right one. Stream now on Zee5.

Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (2012)

The first movie of Tamil Nadu’s minister’s son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, didn’t fail the audience. Many were expecting a flop movie, especially when it is the debut film of a politician’s son, but surprisingly, the movie was a box office hit. I myself watched it thrice in the theatre. With the effortless comedy of Santhanam and Hansika Motwani’s cuteness, the movie still stands as a family blockbuster. You can watch Oru Kal Oru Kannadi on Sun Nxt.

Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom (2012)

Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom stole the show with its low-budget cinematography and a great plot. The movie didn’t include any extravagant dance numbers, famous actors (the lead is Vijay Sethupathy, but back then, he was only an amateur) and such. The story is about a soon-to-be groom who ends up forgetting almost half of his life’s memories. The next day before his wedding, the friends try their best to wind up his marriage. Truth be told, this movie will forever be my personal favourite. It is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (2015)

Naanum Rowdy Dhaan starring Vijay Sethupathy, Nayanthara, Parthiban and RJ Balaji, is all about a girl trying to avenge her father’s murder. When she seeks the help of a so-called Rowdy, the entire revenge plan becomes chaotic. The best part about this movie is the chemistry between the leads and the beautiful soundtrack produced by Anirudh Ravichander. Naanum Rowdy Dhaan is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Mookuthi Amman (2020)

Mookuthi Amman is a fantasy comedy movie that breaks down religious stereotypes. A young man who hates his life gets to befriend one of the famous goddesses, and since then, his life takes a big U-turn. With lots of spontaneous jokes, the movie is really captivating as it conveys a great message to the audience. You can enjoy this flick on Disney+ Hotstar.
