Synopsis

Chu Sang Woo is a junior computer science majoring student who prizes reason, rules, and a rigid sense of what is right above all else. As part of his university work, he is told to work on a group project for the liberal arts, whereby the group is required to make a final presentation in order to pass the module. But as the rest of the group – whom he knows nothing about – have decided to leave him to do all the work on his own, he decides to remove their names, and make the presentation in his name.

But little did he know that when he did this, he would deal a heavy blow to the academic prospects of a senior student named Jang Jae Young. The latter, a design major, is Chu Sang Woo’s polar opposite. He is stylish, fun-loving, and – above all – extraordinarily popular. He is the closest thing the college has to a superstar! But when his credit for the liberal arts project is taken away, his grand plans to study abroad are suddenly thrown up in the air. He seeks out Chu Sang Woo and is of a mind to torment him. But when the duo is forced to work together, a strange attraction starts to develop between them…

1. Park Seo Ham’s Outstanding Performance

Park Seo Ham was beyond impressive in his portrayal of Jae Young. He has a vibrant personality and gives off major boyfriend vibes. Jae Young is one of the most charming and green flag characters in the history of BLs. He was super gentle and kind to Sang Woo after he realized his feelings for him. Seo Ham was able to successfully deliver a great range of micro-expressions with exceptional subtlety. His brilliant acting is definitely worth looking forward to.

2. Jae Chan in the role of Chu Sang Woo

Jae Chan, a member of K-pop group DONGKIZ, exhibits a telling performance and was undoubtedly remarkable in the role of Chu Sang Woo. Sang Woo appears to be poised and distant but also has an endearing side to him that we get to see once he starts to open up to Jae Young. Jae Chan’s acting feels so natural that it is hard to believe that he is a relatively new actor. He is certainly an up-and-coming actor to look out for.

3. Unparalleled Chemistry

Between intense gazes and heart fluttering smiles, the series is doused with soul-stirring moments between Jae Young and Sang Woo. They have undeniably strong chemistry on and off-screen. Seo Ham and Jae Chan look ridiculously cute together and it is an absolute treat to watch them share the same screen. You can see the sparks flying when they meet for the very first time and as the story progresses, their growing affection towards each other starts to become more evident.

4. A Refreshing BL drama

The series follows the heartwarming love story of Jae Young and Sang Woo who starts off as enemies and it revolves around their thriving romance rather than focusing on the wonted coming out journey, where the main characters spend the better part of the show dealing with warranted confusion of being attracted to someone of the same gender. This provides the drama with a greater leeway to explore a series of other complex emotions. It also effectively utilizes graphic design as its backdrop which lends it an air of authenticity that is hard to come across in BL dramas.

5. Bite Sized

With only 8 episodes that are 20-30 minutes long, Semantic Error offers a quick fix to satiate your hunger for binge-watching, especially when you are looking to watch a new series but is not in the mood to sit through hour-long episodes. It is short, lighthearted and basically wholesome, a perfect pick me up on your bad days.

6. Better Female Representation

The female characters in this drama are rather sweet and have a strong sense of self-worth which is not always the case with BL dramas where the supporting characters are depicted as mere plot devices to trigger the protagonist’s identity crisis.

MUST WATCH

Semantic Error can easily be billed as one of the best K-dramas of 2022. It has surpassed all my expectations and has set a new standard for all the upcoming BL dramas. Semantic Error is a feel-good drama with spectacular cinematography, fantastic soundtracks, a well-crafted storyline and a perfect cast, which makes it a must-watch.

Semantic Error is now streaming on Viki!
