This is Us Season 6 Episode 3 is titled ‘Four Fathers’. Actor Jon Huertas aka Miguel stepped in to direct the 42 minutes episode. The show stars Mandy Moore (Rebecca), Milo Ventimiglia (Jack), Sterling K Brown (Randall), Justin Hartley (Kevin), Chris Sullivan (Toby), Susan Kelechi Watson (Beth), Chrissy Metz (Kate), Lyric Ross (Deja) and several others. The episode is dedicated to fathers.

On his Instagram page, actor-director Jon wrote, “So this is happening tonight! @nbcthisisus airs tonight at 8/9c and lo and behold they let me do it again! The #director is only as good as the #actors #crew #writers and #producers – which on this show, are the #best !”

This is Us Season 6 Episode 3 Recap Contains Spoilers

This is Us Season 6 Episode 3 ‘Four Fathers’ starts with Kate and Toby’s son Jack cooking the meat on the grill. He jokes about himself how a blind guy using the grill to his wife, Lucy. Jack says that the smell always takes him back to “that day”. Lucy asks him why he keeps using the smoker as that thing, and that day was the reason Kate and Toby’s marriage blew up. We see a blurry flashback of Toby telling baby Jack, “Don’t get too close, buddy”. Immediately, Kate is yelling her son’s name loudly.

As the title suggests, the episode is about four fathers – Jack, Toby, Randall and Toby. Talking about Jack, he is upset after coming home from work as he doesn’t get time to spend with the Big Three. Jack tells Rebecca how he became a father who leaves the house before breakfast and comes home after dinner. He decides to take the kids for their first movie on the big screen – An American Tail. At the theatre, Kate asks her father if he will live at work forever.

Inside the theatre, a tired Jack falls asleep during the movie. Kevin gets bored and walks out of the theatre. When Jack wakes up, he panics and leaves the cinema hall with two other kids to find Kevin. Rebecca is at the police station where Kevin is sitting. Jack reaches there and asks how they find out whom to call. Rebecca shows how she writes their phone number on the kids’ shoes. Jack feels guilty and terrible for not being present for his kids and not being careful. But Rebecca comforts him and tells him that what happened is not really his fault.

Coming to Toby, due to his job in San Franciso, Toby gets only a weekend to spend with his kids, baby Jack and Hailey. We can see how slowly the couple has differences because of their kids, schedules and plans. In one scene, Kate reminds Toby to put Jack to sleep at 3 pm. Later, the couple has to go out for a children’s singing event where Kate teaches. But instead of putting Jack to sleep, Toby plays with him with a new toy.

Later, when the couple plans to leave, Jack becomes cranky. Even the babysitter fails to calm him down. Kate is upset with Toby for not putting their son to sleep in the afternoon. Toby tells Kate to go to the event alone, and he will take care of Jack at home. When she reaches home, Toby makes it up to his wife. He also shows her the new Smoker he got for them. The makers didn’t show the Smoker incident clearly in today’s episode.

The third father in focus in NBC’s This is Us Season 6 Episode 3 is Kevin. Kevin lives at Kate’s house after taking up the Manny show again. His intention was also to spend more time with his kids by living closer to Madison and their kids. However, Kevin misses many important moments of his kids’ lives. Whenever he visits the twins, they’re mostly sleeping. He also takes out the frustration on Madison. They argue but sort it out immediately. Later at night, Kevin feels low and makes a phone call to his ex-flame Cassidy.

Randall is quite excited to teach driving to his daughter Deja. He decides to play some music from his phone in the car. But Deja tells him that she doesn’t want to listen to his old songs and connects her phone via Bluetooth. Deja receives messages from her boyfriend, Malik, who’s in Boston. In the messages, Malik says he’s missing her and how the bed feels empty without her. There’s pin-drop silence in the car.

At home, Randall expresses his annoyance to Beth and says they need to ground her and make her realise she cannot lie. Beth tells Randall to calm down and decide what to do. Later, Beth tells Randall that Deja is not a child and she’s in love. She takes away her phone and decides to put their daughter on birth control. Randall goes to his daughter’s room and has a hearty conversation with her. But he tells Deja that she cannot meet Malik anytime soon. “Well, that’s gonna be a problem,” says Deja, and there’s awkward silence again.

This is Us Season 6 Episode 3 Recap: Final Thoughts

Four Fathers showed us what fatherhood is all about. Sometimes, they miss out on the best moments of their kids’ lives. Sometimes, they want to be present just like the mothers. As fathers, they also have to make decisions that will affect their children. It was overall a heartwarming episode. But even in the endearing moments, we know that this is the beginning of the end of Toby and Kate’s marriage. So it’s going to be a sob saga for the couple’s fans.
