At the beginning of the episode, we see Leanne Grayson straightening everything around the house in wait for Dorothy to come. This is when Julian calls her and tells her that they are leaving the hospital with Dorothy. If memory serves, in the last season Dorothy fell down after the stair rail broke. What might have been chalked up to a terrible coincidence has only confirmed that Leanne is somehow behind all of this.

Viewers soon receive confirmation of the same when the Turner house has been broken into and Leanne is being attacked. She runs to the car and hides out there. However, many people from the Church of the Lesser Saints were present in the area and they were not backing down. Leanne soon starts coughing in the car seeing that the people were stuffing leaves in the exhaust, smoking up the inside of the car. Unable to take it anymore, she has a hoard of pigeons that rain down on the intruders and drive them away.

However, her homeless friends from the park weren’t around, she tells them that nothing bad will happen now. She is still unaware of Roscoe’s betrayal. Finally, she cleans up everything and changes out of her ruined clothes to welcome Dorothy. The newly recovered patient is here and she is not taking any of Leanne’s hospitality. Even Sean has taken to keeping Leanne away from his wife.

Leanne makes her way to the room where she has been living and we can see that there are some embellishments in it now. She has truly made herself home. But she has just been rejected by the family, so the tensions rise and the ground in the cellar cracks, going far enough to crack the front of the sidewalk. The episode ends.

Servant Season 4 Episode 1 Review

It is refreshing to see that the writers have plunged the viewers right into the action without any unnecessary exposition. It has definitely set an increasing pace that would be impressive if they maintained it throughout the season. Additionally, the use of a new and improved opening theme for the last season confirmed that there is an air of finality in this instalment.

The show consistently employs inanimate objects as symbols of rising tension in the household and the absence of Jericho’s presence in the season premiere also indicates how this family is now way beyond the baby drama and things have gotten bigger than a little child’s life. It is brilliant that these subtle signals that truly make the show as interesting as it is. The recurring motifs are a language that regular viewers are incredibly well attuned to.

M Night Shyamalan has a remarkable opportunity to end this saga with an explosive end or one that invites thrill and horror. It is a testament to the writing and cinematography that the show continues to be as interesting as the first season.
