Red Notice Review: An Uproarious Action-Comedy!

Red Notice is an action-comedy that’s released in limited theatres in the US. Directed and written by Rawson Marshall Thurber, the film stars Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, Ritu Arya and Chris Diamantopoulos. The cinematography is by Markus Förderer, edited by Michael L. Sale and music by Steve Jablonsky.

The synopsis reads, “An FBI profiler pursuing the world’s most wanted art thief becomes his reluctant partner in crime to catch an elusive crook who’s always one step ahead.”

Netflix’s Red Notice Review Contains No Spoilers

Red Notice has three golden eggs with fascinating backstories and three intriguing people. Two people want to steal the precious eggs, while one wants to protect them. As seen in the trailer, Dwayne Johnson, who plays FBI profiler John Hartley, is the good guy. Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) and The Bishop are the baddies (Gal Gadot).

When Booth and John cross paths, John’s life takes a turn for the worse. To capture the Bishop, the FBI profiler must partner up with art thief Booth. The Bishop is a better thief than Booth and is constantly one step ahead of him. Even if Booth denies it, you’ll realise how incredible she is!

We get a lot of high-octane action scenes, terrific comedy, a sensual dance number, and twists amid the ‘who’s going to steal the three eggs first to make a fortune’ story. Are these reasons enough to keep you hooked on Red Notice? Yes!  I enjoyed every minute of Rawson’s latest Netflix offering, from the action scenes to the comedy.

Ryan Reynolds has an endearingly funny face. I chuckled the moment he appeared on screen because he’s both adorable and amusing. Hollywood is really spoiling us with these thieves with a good sense of fashion and humour. John Hartley, played by Dwayne Johnson, owns every scene in which he appears. After the disappointing Jungle Cruise, I’m glad The Rock got something amazing to treat his fans this year.

Gal Gadot, who plays The Bishop, can steal not only valuable antiquities but also our hearts. Here’s another criminal with a gorgeous sense of fashion and terrific looks!. Ritu Arya plays a good cop who is also on the lookout for these two art thieves. The Umbrella Academy Season 2 actor has done a superb job too.

With their bromance and dialogues, Ryan and Dwayne leave you in splits. While one is a criminal and the other lives by his moral convictions, their minds work similarly when plotting evil plans. When the trio shares scenes, it’s every bit entertaining. There’s a fight scene between the three, and you don’t know who to root because all become your favourite by that time.

I haven’t seen a good action comedy in a long time. Red Notice has filled that gap. What I enjoyed about Rawson’s approach was how he seamlessly integrated jokes into the story. Even in fight sequences, you don’t see it coming. There’s a call back to various movies, starring these three actors. These references will leave you cackling.

Red Notice Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, Red Notice is an uproarious action-comedy. The performances are outstanding, the premise is engaging, the action is thrilling, and the humour is amusing. One of the twists is predictable but it doesn’t take away any fun. It’s a must-watch.

Red Notice will release on Netflix on November 12.
