Bill Russell Legend Review: An Excellent Documentary That Will Live On Like Russell’s Legacy

Commemorating the late iconic NBA player’s legacy, the Bill Russell Legend documentary provided a fantastic view of his life, struggles, and everlasting core values. Directed by Sam Pollard, who is best known for Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power, the two-part documentary included original archives to impressively show Russell’s momentary championships, his relationship with Wilt Chamberlain, activism events and other critical perspectives.

Bill Russell, the man who won championships 11 times in the 13 seasons he played, was the NBA MVP five times in a row. When the legend passed away on July 31, 2022, the world of the NBA mourned the most remarkable and smartest player’s departure. Russell not only played victoriously on-court, but he was also prominent as a person. During the 50s, when racism towards black was profuse, Russell’s victories set a huge milestone. In this documentary, all of those notable moments are presented visually, which is a feast for every Russell fan.

The official Netflix description of the docuseries reads,

“The story of Russell’s domination in basketball is intertwined with his impact off the court, and the two-part documentary film Bill Russell: Legend tells the full story of his life, highlighting both his long career with the Boston Celtics and the activism that ultimately changed the sport forever.”

As the docuseries include archive videos, the cast that will be seen are Bill Russell, Barack Obama, Wilt Chamberlain, Kenny Smith, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Seth Curry, Jalen Rose, Julius Erving, Chris Paul, Isiah Thomas, Jerry West, Red Auerbach and Bill Bradley. Additionally, Corey Stoll narrates the episodes, and Jeffrey Wright reads from Russell’s memoirs.

Many professionals like basketball players, coaches, journalists and others who worked with Bill Rusell took part in the docuseries. All of them can be seen giving positive remarks regarding Russell’s brilliant work, his blueprints and the amount of pressure he underwent. The archive videos of Russell present in the docuseries give insight into how he struggled in the initial matches, which led him to create his own mastergame.

The docuseries not only shows the viewers about Russell’s skills on the court but also opens a new arena to witness what pushed the star to fight for Black rights. It is evident that Russell has been facing racism since he was a child. In fact, we also hear about his father’s story, which strongly points out how racism affected black people.

Moreover, in the docuseries, we dive into Russell’s childhood, school days, other sports interests like the high jump, his love life, his wish to give his children a racism-free life, etc. With adequate footage, the docuseries exemplified the star’s life and gave the viewers a whole cake.

Viewers can witness the amount of mental pressure Russell had to go through despite being an Olympic star. Even when he was honoured in Boston, he struggled to build a house due to racism. Apart from this, we also have a complete story of what happened in Mississippi when Russell set up a basketball clinic.

Above all this, the power and exploitation of media houses are also shown. Journalists purposely put down Russell’s skills just because he is black. They term him a man who simply runs and jumps around rather than actually stating how he invented new defence tricks. In the 13 seasons that he played, he has won 11 championships which no other player can ever imagine doing. Hence, the docuseries accurately presents how a man single-handedly changed the game of NBA proudly as a black man.
