Disconnect The Wedding Planner is a Kenyan rom-com directed by Africa Movie Academy’s Best Director Award-nominated David ‘Tosh’ Gitonga, who is well known for directing Nairobi Half Life. Starring Pascal Tokodi in the lead role, the story revolves around his scam trap and his struggle to make the wedding arrangements of a huge investor come true. The movie is in English but does include some Nigerian dialogue. Moreover, the movie runs approximately 1 hour and 47 minutes.
The official Netflix description of the movie reads,
After falling victim to a scam, a desperate man races against the clock as he attempts to plan a luxurious destination wedding for an important investor.

The film’s main cast includes Catherine Kamau, Pascal Tokodi, Brenda Wairimu, Brian Ogola, Patricia Kihoro, Justin Mirichii, Magdalene Otanwa, Tope Tedela, Francis Onwochei, Irene Paul, Ozioma Jesus, Wale Ojo. Most of these actors have starred in the first part of this movie series, Disconnect.
The film starts with a lady called Dee walking into a fancy cafe to meet the film’s protagonist Otis (Pascal Tokodi). Dee asks what is between her and him, to which Otis heartlessly replies that there isn’t a thing like “us.” He says he likes to have casual relationships as people tend to get bored. Dee walks away heartbroken, but Otis instantly calls another woman and invites her to the restaurant while also flirtatiously looking at other women in the cafe.
Later, we see that Otis has a wedding event management company and asks his friend to invest in their company for his big day. Dele, the friend of Otis, agrees and invests in Otis’ company. Soon after, Otis arranges everything but later finds out that he lost his money to a scammer. Otis loses his mind and seeks his friends’ help. The movie then follows how Otis and his friends make the wedding go smoothly as planned, along with some heartbreaks among them.
In this movie, love and lust themes were hugely shown. TK is in love with Otis, however, Otis doesn’t respond to it. TK is a businesswoman who takes time out of her busy schedule to help Otis. However, Otis keeps having casual sex with the women around him while TK keeps getting hurt. Otis shares a daughter with a woman named Patricia, whom he doesn’t love but only stays with to raise their daughter. After these instances, I didn’t like Otis’ character very much.
On the other side, we have Judy, Celine and Richard’s drama. Celine and Richard are lovers, but they always keep fighting. Judy witnesses her lover cheating on her with her father’s secretary. All these three and their infidelities cross each other, causing a ruckus. However, the end result disappointed me so much!
One of the best aspects of this movie is the Nigerian culture’s portrayal. The global audience can witness how weddings in Nigeria are planned, their culture, music and art forms. I loved the soundtrack and the dance moves these actors gave. The Nigerian food was also shown, making this movie a good watch to learn about other countries traditions.
The dialogues were well-written, emotional, sensible and sometimes humorous. It was nice to see the women being the stars of this movie because it is they who change the men’s minds. Most of the wedding plans are done by the women, and the men accompany them.
In the end, all the characters end up with someone, but it didn’t sit well with me. After all the cheating and mess, I couldn’t believe how someone could easily let go and stick with each other. Yes, people make mistakes, but in this movie, you will find it highly pointless when they try to justify infidelity. I understand that, in reality, this is what happens to most people in relationships but shouldn’t movies set an example?
Disconnect The Wedding Planner: Stream or Skip
If you want to watch a lovely Nigerian comedy film with some steamy scenes and romance, this movie is good to try. It doesn’t have any special sauce to rewatch it, but it’s neither skippable. The actors have done an excellent job, and the costumes, the locations and the editing of the film are noteworthy. Additionally, the Nigerian culture is depicted well enough to learn from.
If you’re planning to watch this movie, stream it on Netflix.
