The Manipulated Review
In the manipulated, Ji Chang-wook’s Park Tae-jung finds himself in a web of betrayal and manipulation when he is suddenly imprisoned for a crime that he did not commit. The series excels in its showcase of this manipulative game, as, beyond the fistfight and whatnot, the series gives us a harrowing cat-and-mouse chase between the perpetrator and a man who is desperate for revenge. The power dynamics constantly shift, and every minute you feel on edge because no one really knows what comes next in this dangerous, unpredictable game.
Tae-jung’s explosive emotional turmoil and Yo-han’s calm, calculated coldness form opposing viewpoints in the series as they constantly clash with one another in brutal ways. The conflicting narrative and shifting truths create the perfect space for the atmospheric tension to grip you hard as the moral ambiguity makes us question not only An Yo-han but Tae-jung as well.

The drama takes its time to drip this information to us. The pacing is deliberate and can be cumbersome sometimes, but it mostly pays off in the end. Every moment, viewers are forced to guess who is coming at Tae-jung next, and we sit there with bated breath, piecing together who is telling the truth and who has the correct intentions. Every conversation feels loaded, and every moment of silence leaves you with a sinking feeling.
The series does a good job with its cinematography, and the cool colour palettes and lingering shots heighten the tension a lot. Although understated, the tension is ever-present, and viewers will find themselves on edge because the sound design is so subtle but impactful. Despite being just another revenge thriller, The Manipulated goes a step further to hold our attention by going beyond the conventional tropes of the wronged party trying to convince everyone that he is innocent. He fights his way to get revenge, and that journey is made more impactful by creating tension through dread rather than a ton of gore.

I think the only real issue that I faced a bit was how long the series took to get to the point. Although Tae-jung doesn’t spend too much time trying to convince everyone that he’s innocent, the series takes a smidge too long to let us know the conspiracy surrounding Tae-jung and Yo-han’s involvement in it all. Regardless, Ji Chang-wook is thoroughly entertaining and will leave everyone hooked, despite the time it takes to get to the point. I enjoyed everyone’s performances as they were believable and delivered the punch required for a revenge thriller like this one.
Final Thoughts

The Manipulated is an engaging and thrilling ride that, although it takes its time to get to the point, is a solid series that will not disappoint. For lovers of revenge thrillers, this one will be worth it, and despite its generic setup, I think it makes great use of the actors and adds some interesting twists to not make it feel stale.
