The Manipulated Ending Explained
The series opens with viewers getting a short look at Park Tae-jung, a good man who doesn’t step back from helping others around him. Thus, when he finds a random phone in a bush, he doesn’t think twice to give it back to its rightful owner, delivering the phone at a phone booth in a desolate tunnel. In a shocking twist after that, he finds himself arrested for the rape and murder of a woman, and despite insisting that he had nothing to do with the crime, a steady stream of mounting, fabricated evidence leads him swiftly to prison.

Inside, he slowly resigns himself to his life in prison, now serving life in prison for a crime he did not commit. 5 years later, and now a hardened criminal, Tae-jung is surprised to find another man landing in prison whose circumstances are eerily similar to his own. Realising that all of this is a big conspiracy that is landing innocents in jail, he is overcome with a sense of revenge. As a result, he decides to break out of prison and search for the people responsible for destroying his life.
He breaks into a facility connected to the shady conspiracy and finds evidence that points to how the evidence is faked and delivered. It’s all planned and meticulous, and from there, Tae-jung finds Yo-han after connecting all the dots.
Does Tae-jung get revenge?

In the last few episodes, Tae-jung and Yo-han confront one another as we learn about Yo-han’s sordid backstory. Having killed his own parents for wealth and power at 16 and framed an escaped convict for the crime, he got the brilliant idea of running this racket and building a secret empire of manipulation and lies. In the end of episode 10, he kills Minister Baek while Tae-jung and Do-kyoung’s high-speed chase ends in the latter’s bloody demise.
Either way, Yo-han offers Tae-jung a deal – he wants him to join his organisation in exchange for wealth and power, but, of course, Tae-jung refuses after having lost everything because of his nemesis. Filled with anger, Tae-jung and Yo-han both get ready for another face-off but will it work in Tae-jung’s favour this time?

What happens in the end?
In episode 11, in a shocking twist, Yong-sik is arrested for the murder of the assemblyman, presumably orchestrated by Yo-han. Tae-jung is left shocked and confronts Yo-han about it. He, of course, is cool as a cucumber and uses this opportunity to play him life a fiddle, instructing him to take the blame instead of Yong-sik.
Without much choice, he does as he is told and a frustrated Yo-han instructs his cronies in the police to kill him off once he goes to prison. In a rather surprising turn of events Chul-hwan eventually helps him escape during transfer and, as it turns out, they have been working together from the very start. He then makes Han-hee lie to Yo-han to give Tae-jung some time and assures him that Tae-jung hung himself in prison.

With the path now open to deliver the final blow, it is revealed that Do-hyeong, who was presumed dead previously, is alive and bids for Arleli’s 100th sculpture. He stands in front of Yo-han, following Tae-jung’s plans, which results in him getting arrested for Assemblyman Baek’s murder for which Do-kyeong hands over the evidence.
Of course, he gets out as soon as he goes to prison and delivers the final blow to Tae-jung, killing Do-kyeong and Yong-sik. Chang Li keeps Eun-bi alive while Tae-jung breaks into Yo-han’s house to finish him off. However, when he tries to fight with Yo-han, he finds Eun-bi in their hands, bruised and battered. He almost gives up, but the two of them eventually fight against Yo-han and Chang Li, resulting in Tae-jung stabbing Yo-han when he watches a video of the psychotic man strangling his brother to death.
In a shocking twist, though, he keeps him alive, hoping for him to pay for everything that he did.

In the aftermath, it is revealed that Yo-han did die in a fire in his home but the truth is finally out, exonerating everyone he has ever harmed unfairly and putting a lot of people behind bars. Yong-sik is also shown to be alive and Tae-jung finally receives a not guilty verdict.
The show ends with a happy ending as we see Tae-jung running a sweet little cafe with all of his friends safe around him. However, the last scene showcases someone sitting in Yo-han’s surveillance room, going over old footage. Does this mean that someone more powerful is behind the entire ordeal and Tae-jung isn’t safe yet? We might have to wait for another season to get specifics!
