The Great Shamsuddin Family Review
If nosy family is your trigger, then The Great Shamsuddin Family will leave you on edge as a bunch of random people descend into Bani Ahmed’s life for no rhyme or reason and cause utter chaos while she desperately tries to finish a novel on the day of her deadline. The film, with a runtime of 96 minutes, is so uncomfortable to sit through that it is painfully relatable on every front.
The film showcases the relatable chaos and warmth of family, who are sometimes overbearing but do not back down from huddling together to protect the ones that they love. It’s as if things just don’t get easy for Bani, who is already having a very hectic day. The sense of domestic chaos, emotional baggage and old-school family bonds feel real and grounded and will catch your heart in odd ways.

The story unfolds over 12 hours in one apartment. This makes the situation more intense because the claustrophobia is palpable, which makes the fights feel more impactful. It’s a setting that most urban families can relate to, more so the younger generations, as Bani’s privacy is hampered, and she goes through a series of ups and downs emotionally. The conflicts are relatable and triggering in every way and will leave viewers feeling for Bani and her sisters’ pain and antics.
Another interesting thing about this film is that it focuses on women-centric storytelling. Focusing on a ton of flawed characters who constantly make bad decisions, the film explores these women’s relationships with themselves and each other, and, even though they fight amongst themselves, their love and adoration for one another come to the surface at every turn. It reflects the layered and conflicted lives of many women balancing responsibilities, ambitions and familial expectations. It also interestingly showcases how the lives of the older and younger generations clash with one another, having changed from one thing to another over the years.

However, the film can get a bit too chaotic at times, and you start to question the logic behind random people arriving at Bani’s doorstep every hour. I couldn’t help but wonder how no one has the decency to possibly call ahead before coming to her house. Moreover, the sheer number of people and their conflicts can also get overwhelming at times because it’s just one thing after another constantly. And also, some of these people are just so tone-deaf and annoying that you feel absolutely incensed.
In the end, though, all of these women have such nice chemistry with one another that it’s difficult not to smile when they overcome a hurdle. With fantastic performances from all of the actors, the slice-of-life drama, with realistic characters who have emotional complexity, will tug on your heart and leave you happy.
Final Thoughts

The Great Shamsuddin Family is a warm and chaotic watch that will tug on your heartstrings. It’s a relatable, although a bit over-the-top, film that has the potential to get on your nerves but reels itself back in at the right time.
