Search: The Naina Murder Case Review
Sometimes, when you watch a TV show, especially a crime thriller, you want to watch something that finds its end somehow and gives you someone to point a finger at. Search: The Naina Murder Case is a thrilling watch that focuses on children’s safety in today’s age and the importance of having open and honest conversations with your kids, but it ends on a very annoying and, frankly, infuriating note and makes you question your sanity at the last moment.
Following the brutal murder of a young college student, the series follows the investigation led by ACP Sanyukta Das, who is on the verge of retirement, and her new partner, who will take over the role from her, ACP Jai Kanwal. The series is quite simplistic and follows a tried and tested path. Even the bickering between Sanyukta and her daughter, Maahi, is obvious and doesn’t bring out any new emotions.
The mystery surrounding the murder keeps you invested, but as the story unfolds, that, too, starts to become a bit obvious. At some point, the perpetrator feels like they are a given, but you suddenly see something completely out of the blue, and before you can click on the next episode button, you realise that the series is over. Yes, you have been left on a silly, unnecessary, cash-grabby cliffhanger. The Danish series’s first season, on which the Hotstar show is based, has 20 episodes. So, of course, the series is going to go above and beyond to keep us watching for 6 episodes further, if not more.
I think that’s what is going to ruin your experience of this series. Albeit obvious, Search: The Naina Murder Case has its moments of intrigue and interest that will leave you waiting patiently for a resolution. But when the end comes, it’s just so annoying that your experience of watching the show will be ruined. It poses questions just to pad the runtime and make us wait for what’s to come, when these questions were completely unnecessary from the start.
Konkana Sen Sharma, however, is fantastic in the show as it’s always a treat to watch her on-screen. I continue to not understand why a Bengali woman would speak in Hindi at home and only sometimes in Bengali to remind us of her origins, but I am starting to slowly give up on these questions at this point. Other than her, Surya Sharma is great as well, and his little bickering with Sanyukta adds tension to the story and makes you wonder whether they will ever bridge the gap between them.
Final Thoughts
In the end, the Hostar Special series leaves you disappointed. The simplistic storyline makes for an easy 6-episode watch, but it’s the unnecessary ending that left a bad taste in my mouth. Now we have to wait for things to work out in the next season.
