– Salesman of the Year Review Does Not Contain Spoilers –
Salesman of the Year is that kind of show that immediately pops up the moment you watch it. Not because it looks or feels spectacular. But it’s a show that is just so cliché and in your face, that you almost feel uncomfortable watching it.
This is an extremely low-effort show, so much so that the 3 to 4 promotional materials that it decides to put in the show are done without any ingenuity or genius. It just looks cheap and feels out of place, and it’s forced so much that you immediately want to skip ahead.
And, unfortunately, it’s not just a one-time thing. Every episode seems specifically designed to push these ads towards us, and then there are these low-effort things happening surrounding it.
Moving on from that, the series tries to be funny and quirky with Karthik moving to a new city and trying to win over the hearts of those around him while also attempting to win over his new turf. We are reminded multiple times that he’s a star salesman from the South. But man, he’s so boring and bland that it’s sleep-inducing.
Although Kathrik is from Hyderabad, he seems like any other Delhi boy. He speaks and acts like he was born and brought up in the city and not like he’s trying to understand the ropes of a new place. It’s a sad and confusing watch since you constantly question whether this series is even serious about showing something about a salesman in a new place or if it’s a ploy to sell us stuff.
As Karthik discusses the various complicated things in his life, it feels ingenuine because you constantly see the Imperial Blue bottle (for example) front and centre. It seems like he is talking to the bottle of whiskey instead of his friends. After a while, it just becomes thoroughly funny watching the stupidity on-screen.
The storyline is full of clichés and unnecessary conflicts that honestly just make a joke out of Delhi people. It has all the things that have become synonymous with Delhi and its inhabitants. People are rude, drive huge cars, don’t adhere to rules and whip out the generic ‘tu janta nahi mera baap kaun hai’ at every given opportunity.
Performances are fine throughout although they don’t get much of an interesting character to do something with them. Most of the show’s efforts are put behind showing a product and placing it in, what feels like, a smart placement.
Summing Up: Salesman of the Year
Salesman of the Year is a joke of a show that doesn’t do anything other than badly shove products down our throats. It’s not interesting, thrilling or funny and is mostly very cringy. There are other shows that follow similar veins but aren’t so blatantly insulting to their audience. Would be a better idea to check those out.
Salesman of the Year is streaming on MX Player.
