Queen of Tears Plot

Queen of Tears Emotional Odyssey

Hong Hae-in is a chaebol heiress, known as the ‘queen’ of Queens Group Department Stores while Baek Hyun-woo, her husband, is the legal director of the conglomerate and known as the ‘supermarket prince’. Hong Hae-in is described as a cold and calculated woman while Baek Hyun-woo is warm-hearted and emotional.

A marriage between an influential woman and an entry-level employee is dubbed the ‘wedding of the century’ and is nothing but a facade. Belonging to two different worlds, the couple could not overcome their differences but a big crisis brings these two together. Soon, they realise that maybe being different from one another is not so bad after all.

Hae-in’s Past Memories

In the second last episode, Hae-in loses all her memories after the surgery – causing her to be vulnerable. Eun-sung took advantage of that and tried to bring her on his side but her heart belonged with someone else – Hyun-woo. When she received the diary from Germany, she felt a lot of emotions as she read about her feelings for Hyun-woo.

The pure desperation and the overwhelming feelings are displayed so well on her face that it tugs at the viewer’s heartstrings as well. Kim Ji-won perfectly displayed the emotions that someone in her position would be experiencing.

Hyun-woo’s reaction to Hae-in’s car crash

In Germany, they remain at a crossroads regarding the surgery when an incident shakes the couple forever. When Hyun-woo witnessed the car crash, he assumed Hae-in was in it and broke the glass with his bare hand. Upon seeing her safe, emotions took over Hyun-woo and one could see how he could not comprehend or speak well.

Hae-in remains shocked as he just held onto her and thanked God for keeping her safe. As she held onto him, she realised that this was how he would be if she passed away – making her feel unspeakable emotions.

Hae-in confesses her love

After she woke up in the hospital, the first thing she told Hyun-woo were the words ‘I love you’. She realised that she did not have much time and all she wanted to do was spend some time with the person she had loved all along. She also realised how much he had done for her and her family – from taking them to his house to facing Eun-sung on his own.

Hyun-woo takes the bullet for Hyun-woo

In the last episode, Hyun-woo went to the hunting cabin to save Hae-in. Even after Eun-sung stopped them with a gun, Hyun-woo did not think before taking the bullet for her. The traumatic incident left a scar on Hae-in’s heart.

The scene when she thought back to how she mistreated him in the last few days shows how much she still loved him even after losing all her memories. The tears, her expressions and the small dialogues add to the scene.

Hyun-woo and Hae-in’s Emotional Scene at the Church

In Germany, they visit the doctor and he advises Hyun-woo to begin the prep as soon as possible. He goes to tell her but she is nowhere to be found. He runs everywhere but can’t find her. Later, he goes to the church, sees her written prayer and sees her crying by herself. They share a heartbreaking moment as one tries to convince the other to see their side. The church scene made us tear up and root for them as they realised just how much they love each other.

Hyun-woo’s message for Hae-in

The episode 13 epilogue makes everyone emotional as Hyun-woo makes a video for Hae-in in case she loses her memories. He tells her about him and their story. He promises that no matter what happens, he will never leave her – even if she forgets their promise or him. Kim Soo-hyun displayed his emotions with grace and tenacity and his dialogue delivery brought us to tears.

Hae-in shares her feelings with Hyun-woo

In episode 4, Hae-in gets lost in Yeongdu-ri after she goes through an episode. Worried about her, Hyun-woo looks around for her till sunset. He finds her near a field and shouts at her out of concern. To remain stoic, she tries to brush off the incident and Hyun-woo walks away angrily. Seeing him covered in sweat, she breaks and tells him the truth. She reveals that she is scared of how the condition does not let her remember anything and she does not want it to overpower her. Hyun-woo gets overwhelmed by many emotions and runs and hugs her tight.

Hyun-woo disagrees with Hae-in

In episode 10, Hyun-woo and Hae-in spend some together and talk about the ‘what ifs’ like what if they worked on the wounds they received during the marriage and would it change them? To that, Hae-in tells him that it would have been better if they never got married and broke off earlier.

That way, Hyun-woo would be able to meet someone better. Hyun-woo immediately disagreed with that and told her that he would always look out for her and live in regret. He also expresses his regrets about how he handled their marriage, leaving them feeling intense emotions.

Queen of Tears is streaming on Netflix.
