-Mom Don’t Do That Review Does Not Contain Spoilers-

Based on a real-life account, this Netflix series follows the story of a 60-year-old widowed woman, played by Billie Wang, and her two adult daughters. The three women deal with love, relationships, and people as they grow together after losing the man in their family. The main storyline revolves around the mom who is trying to get back into the world of dating and love and have a second chance with the use of modern dating apps.

All the episodes are packed with laughter and craziness as we see the sixty-year-old using dating apps for the first time in her life. Her daughters, played by Alyssa Chia and Alice Ko, unite to present a denial and refusal of their mother’s new way of life on these dating apps.

Mom Don’t Do That! was adapted from a best-selling novel in Taiwan and produced by Butt Mountain Co. and CJ E&M HK under South Korea’s CJ E&M. The show’s budget was TWD100 million ($3.35 million). One of the main characters- Alyssa Chia also serves as the executive producer for the Netflix series.

Another focus of the story is the life of Ru Rong, the first daughter who is now around forty years old and still single. Her mother feels ashamed of the fact that her daughter is failing at securing a marriage and berates her for not being able to seduce or stick with a guy. She is an author of tonnes of popular and well-read romance novels, ironically, she cannot use her romanticness in real life, but she is an incurable romantic.

Along with the craziness and drama, the family is also facing some financial issues because their savings are running out slowly and gradually and Mei Mei, the mother, is on her feet to find a lover and regain what she has lost. The series unfolds beautifully, and an amazing flow is created and enhanced with every progressing episode. We see Mei Mei in a personal interview dialogue every few scenes as she introduces her life and thoughts to us. The family dynamic is highlighted in the series, and the notion of women empowerment is also seen in the women-led family.

The most appealing thing about the series is how every character has a dissected story that gradually weaves into one. However, at times the episode appears unnecessarily elongated, making it feel like a filler scene or even a filler episode. There are some problematic instances that might feel a little unusual when you watch it, but then again, it’s all humour.

The show starts off light-heartedly and ends with even more laughter and giggles when the husband/lover hunting concludes. Along with the comedy, the show also brings in moments of sentiments of the family, especially when the three women think about the man of the family who died five years ago; these warm scenes add depth to the show’s plot.

Overall, the plot of the show is very unique and engaging as we barely see an older person on a dating app. The style of filming is very appealing, and it adds to the humour of the show. The show is pretty much suitable for everyone, and it will definitely keep you on your feet to find out whether Mei Mei is able to find a new lover by the conclusion of the series or not.
