Light the Wild Episode 1 Recap

The episode starts with the stars arriving at the meeting area one by one – their initial unsure attitude starts to fade away the moment they meet their old friends, and the confusion gives way to excitement for what’s to come. Once the greetings are completed, the campers are given 4 keys wherein they are asked to share campers. Thus, after much deliberation, Cammy and Rhydian get their own campers while Ruby Lin shares one with Cheryl Yang and Nikki Hsieh and Puff Kuo share the remaining camper.

After they go through their five-star campers and settle in for their stay there, they start a fun game of badminton wherein some of the participants find it (hilariously) very hard to run after the shuttlecocks. At one point, Ruby hits herself over the head with her racket while trying to serve! Everyone simply disintegrates into a pile of laughter after that fiasco. However, Ruby and Cheryl do end up winning against Cammy and Rhydian.

After the badminton match, it’s time for everyone to have a bite to eat, and they are left shocked when they realise that they have been served their favourite meals and a special guest – Hu Wei-jie. However, there’s a twist – the actors have to swap their favourite meals with someone and can’t share with them. Everyone is left confused and annoyed but decides to draw lots with their name tags to keep things fair.

Rhydian goes first and pulls Cammy’s name, and then there’s a rock-paper-scissors contest wherein Cheryl gets to choose and picks Ruby’s name, and the remaining women also swap their lunches. Of course, eating other people’s favourite foods results in hilarious conversations, and everyone starts to stare at their own dishes while eating what they swapped.

After lunch, everyone orders beers and cocktails and starts playing a round of Avalon and Jenga, but Ruby Lin finds it difficult to stay awake! After quite some time, which includes Lin yawning several times, everyone starts to go on a walk, wherein they find the red mailbox glowing and sending out a notification. Opening it, they find a big envelope inside, containing another recording of a task from Xiaohao (Hu Wei-jie) – they have to team up with their lunch partners and create a fire in the pits outside their campers and boil water. The team who does the task first, wins.

Everyone immediately starts to get to work, and most of them start to copy Rhydian, who has previous camping experience. It’s a confusing mess at first, but they all get the hang of it after a while. Controlling the fire becomes problematic for almost all of them, especially with Rhydian’s team, and in the end, Ruby and Cheryl’s teams win the challenge. The winner gets a dinner of wood-fired fine cuisine, which disappoints everyone who didn’t win since they are now tasked to cook on their own.

Now that the “losers” have to make their own food, it’s a moment of banding together to create something scrumptious. Meanwhile, Ruby and Cheryl go to their fine dining experience and take Rhydian with them. The latter three eat some really delicious dishes and wine and bond with each other, while the remaining girls have to make the same dishes but on their own. However, at the end of the day, everyone is happy with what they are about to make.

While the three girls enjoy their meals, Rhydian comes over with his own plate of food to eat with them after feeling guilty for going away. Ruby and Cheryl also make their way to the girls and appreciate their cooking thoroughly.

Following the hearty meal and a tiring day in general, it’s time for everyone to relax by the campfire and eat some marshmallows and chocolates. The marshmallow-making process becomes a hilarious moment for everyone to bond. They then move on to play charades and break into two teams, which results in a neck-to-neck and hilarious fight. In the middle of the game, the mailbox lights up, and everyone gets a choice for the breakfast tomorrow. Of course, everyone is left to question whether the show is trying to dupe them of their favourite meals once more.

However, after a day full of activities, everyone finally gets to take a break.

The show is a delightful and easy watch where you don’t have to really think much – it’s a light, fluffy watch that is quite hilarious and also informative. Audiences will learn about the characters from Light the Night, what they like and dislike, and their innermost thoughts in sporadic talking heads.

However, for non-Mandarin speakers, you’re going to be a bit disappointed because the show comes with a lot of (it seems) fun quips on-screen that are not translated. English-speaking audiences will, thus, miss out on that humour throughout the runtime of the show.

All in all, however, the show is quite feel-good and is a great watch if you need something to chill out with.

Light the Wild is streaming on Netflix.
