Kaiju No 8 Season 2 Episode 5: Still

Just when it seemed like everything was finally under control with Kafka defeating Kaiju No. 9, the situation takes an unexpected and devastating turn. Gen, having dealt with his own enemies, starts to suspect that something doesn’t quite add up. What was Kaiju No. 9’s true objective all along?

His suspicion is quickly confirmed when alarms suddenly begin to sound, signaling yet another Kaiju presence. A clone of Kaiju No. 9 emerges, revealing its intention to seize Kaiju power. Even more shocking is the revelation that the body everyone had been fighting wasn’t the true Kaiju No. 9 at all; it had merely been disguising itself as one of the scientists working alongside Isao.

The truth becomes clear: Kaiju No. 9’s real target was Kaiju No. 2 and its current wielder, Isao himself. Though many believed Isao could hold his own against this threat, the reality is far harsher. From the outset, Kaiju No. 9 demonstrates overwhelming strength. While retreat might have been the safer choice, Isao refuses to run, knowing that allowing the creature to survive would only endanger countless more lives.

Determined to stop it here and now, he pushes the Kaiju weapon to nearly its full capacity, tapping into almost 100% of its power. This transformation elevates him to the level of a Daikaiju, but the price is steep; every second he fights costs him years of his life. What follows is a brutal and relentless clash, with Kaiju No. 9 proving to be far more powerful than expected.

Kaiju No 8 Season 2 Episode 5 Review And Recap

This episode begins with the despair that everyone feels after watching Isao merge with Kaiju #9. Kaiju #9 desperately tries to fly away as he must secure the new body, but Kafka and Gen try their best to keep him in one place. They fight endlessly and even managed to destroy half of his body. But that is when Kaiju #9 literally detonates his body and causes a massive explosion. Here, we get to see that for Kaiju #9, Kaiju #8, or Kafka is the biggest threat of all. Before completely going away, Kaijur #9 promises Kafka that the next time they meet, it will be the era of Kaijus.

At the funeral, the scene is as depressing as ever because Isao was truly loved within the Defence Force. Kikoru refused to show up at her father’s funeral and instead asked Gen to train her to become stronger. She was mad at herself that she couldn’t do anything to protect her father, and now she just wishes to kill Kaiju #9 and free her father’s soul as soon as possible. Gen also agrees to help her growth, and we see the same kind of motivation in Kafka.

However, there have been considerable changes within Kafka, both physically and mentally. He is slowly becoming more of a Kaiju than he is a human. This means that there will come a time when he might not ever return to being human. Kafka knows that further transformation is not good for his health, but he still refuses to abide by that. Later, we see him spending some quality time with his past colleagues at his old job.

Verdict

I really like today’s episode and especially loved the way it ended. Gen finally gets past his animosity towards Kaijus and accepts Kafka for who he is. He outright asks Kafka for his help and even claims that he will just kill Kafka if he ever becomes a full-fledged Kaiju.
