Jogi Review: Historical Tearjerker That Shines Light on the Tragedy of 1984 India

Jogi is a heartbreaking historical thriller that portrays the tragedy of the 1984 riots in Delhi which is a disaster that cannot and should not be forgotten. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, the movie stars Diljit Dosanjh, Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub, Hiten Tejwani, Kumud Mishra, alongside other cast members.

The plot of Jogi revolves around the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. The film takes you through the desperation of a group of people during those three days who are trying to escape the city to seek refuge in Punjab.

Netflix’s synopsis of the movie reads:

In 1980s New Delhi, three friends make heartbreaking sacrifices and take chilling risks to save their fellow civilians from danger. Filmfare Award-winning actor and singer Dijit Dosanjh leads this stirring thriller.

The movie starts off on the typical calm before the storm note as a normal Sikh family is seen starting their day in a little special way as two occasions are being looked forward to celebrating. But what they are unaware of is the bloody storm that has already made its way into their lives.

As the news of Indira Gandhi’s assassination spreads and some political leaders make their way to create havoc in the city, Jogi (Diljit Dosanjh) has to protect his family and his people from the mayhem that surrounds them. And with the help of his friends, this task doesn’t seem impossible.

The first 10 minutes of the movie are enough to capture your attention and let you know that you’ve just selected a good movie to watch that won’t make you fall asleep in the middle. The historical tragedy that has not been forgotten by the community should not be forgotten by the people of this country.

Those times were not easy and when you see them on the screen is when you realise the brutality the people faced during those three days. While we have read about the events in our history books but it does not hit us as hard as when we see them ourselves.

I have to say that Diljit Dosanjh has put up a good performance in this movie and the same has to be said for Kumud Mishra who played the role of the antagonist to perfection. I could really feel my anger rising during his scenes.

The movie keeps the thrill the whole time and with the tragic love story of the protagonist being added (because Bollywood just can’t leave this behind) the movie was an entertainer and an eye-opener.

The director has done a good job of capturing the chaotic times along with the desperation of the people, be it in a very Bollywood way but it is done very well and the cast too has done an amazing job. And while the ending quote makes us realise that the idea of the movie was something very different, the Sikh Massacre became the centre of the movie.

Summing Up: Jogi

The movie will make your tear flow while you cannot help but feel your heart getting heavy with the emotions that you will feel throughout the movie. And if that is not enough, knowing that this is based on true events only makes your emotions worse.

While the movie could have done a better job in trying to bring out the historical tragedy, it is at the end of the day another movie that tries to overshadow such events with themes of friendship and so on.

Altogether, this is a stream-worthy movie for those who want to see the brutal history of our country while also trying to avoid it to a certain extent.

Watch Jogi on Netflix.
