Monster Inside Review
Huluween is on and Monster Inside forms a part of it. The crime horror documentary might just be a treat for true crime fans but, has extremely sensitive content on torture and sadistic practices which need to be looked into before you dive into this docu-film.
Monster Inside tells the story of Russ McKamey- a Navy veteran who has capitalised on people’s horrors and made a life out of his sadistic fantasies. You ask how? Well, this McKamey is the very creator of the McKamey Manor! The manor offers you an immersive horror experience. Or so you think until you actually visit and get yourself in possibly one of the most sadistic situations ever.
Hulu’s latest documentary is factual and educational. However, if it is trying to tell a story or give a positive/negative impact, it is unclear. The film focuses on McKamey’s story and his words and his part of the deal that gets you to the manor. On the other hand, we have people who have actually been to the manor, participants and their experiences.

It is odd and uncanny but, more than the visually disturbing part of the film, what is bothersome is the purpose behind making it. This real-life horror can easily be an inspiration for Netflix’s Black Mirror’s upcoming season. So what is it trying to achieve in the form of this documentary? There is a prime focus on horror enthusiasts who are seeking out this scary, terrifying immersive experience and no matter what the cost they are coming out speaking of the experience in a light that will only make people more greedy and curious to explore this manor.
The participants come on camera to speak about the horrors they wanted and what they got. Russ’ footage is all about the man being honest about what he is about to inflict on the people consenting to be a part of his haunted house. It all ties up the knots to ‘you want it, you got it’. This is where a sense of purposelessness and stagnation comes when you tune into this film.
What Monster Inside could have done more was bring in the psyche of the people involved in the making and functioning of the haunted manor. Why would one want this kind of thrill? Is it a kink or a push of adrenaline that people are looking for? What is driving people to this house still and what makes Russ the way he is? Alas, most of these questions go unanswered in this documentary.
Monster Inside: Final Verdict
With a strong heart and will to sit through some disturbing human torture moments, one will find Monster Inside an interesting experience or fact to know about. However, it can very well be a large campaign to lure horror enthusiasts into trying out things they did not know about. In honesty, it feels that way when you sit with a bunch of confusing points from a documentary.
