Gotham Awards 2022 has been presented by the Gotham Film & Media Institute and was held on November 28, 2022. These awards are presented annually to the makers of independent films at a ceremony in New York City. This year, many diverse films and shows got the spotlight and the deserving awards. Everything Everywhere All at Once
Coming out as a big winner at the award show, Everything Everywhere All at Once follows an ageing Chinese immigrant who is swept up in an insane adventure, where she alone can save the world by exploring other universes connecting with the lives she could have led.
The film won Best Feature, and cast member Ke Huy Quan won Outstanding Supporting Performance. The film is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
All That Breathes
All That Breathes, directed by Shaunak Sen follows two brothers who run a bird hospital dedicated to rescuing injured black kites, a staple in the skies of New Delhi, India. In one of the world’s most populated cities, where cows, rats, monkeys, frogs, and hogs jostle cheek-by-jowl with people, the “Kite Brothers” care for thousands of these mesmerizing creatures that drop daily from New Delhi’s smog-choked skies.
As environmental toxicity and civil unrest escalate, the relationship between this family and the neglected kites forms a poetic chronicle of the city’s collapsing ecology and deepening social fault lines. The film won Best Documentary Feature, however, it is not available to stream on any platform as of now.
Happening
Set in France, in 1963, it follows Anne, a bright young student with a promising future ahead of her. But when she falls pregnant, she sees the opportunity to finish her studies and escape the constraints of her social background disappearing. With her final exams fast approaching and her belly growing, Anne resolves to act, even if she has to confront shame and pain, even if she must risk prison to do so.

Aftersun
The film is set at a fading vacation resort, 11-year-old Sophie treasures rare times together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum (Paul Mescal). As the world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood.
Twenty years later, Sophie’s tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t, in Charlotte Wells’ superb and searingly emotional debut film, which won her Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award.

Winning the Best Screenplay award, Tár is a drama film directed, written and produced by Todd Field. The film depicts the life and downfall of a renowned composer-conductor, Lydia Tár, portrayed by Cate Blanchett. You can watch this film on Amazon Prime Video.
Till
Till is a biographical drama film directed by Chinonye Chukwu and written by Michael Reilly, Keith Beauchamp, and Chukwu, and produced by Beauchamp, Reilly, and Whoopi Goldberg. It is based on the true story of Mamie Till-Bradley, an educator and activist who pursued justice after the murder of her 14-year-old son Emmett in 1955.
The film stars Danielle Deadwyler as Mamie Till-Bradley, for which she won the Outstanding Lead Performance award. Watch this film on Amazon Prime Video.
Murina
Set on a remote island along the Croatian coast, this Cannes Camera d’Or winner follows 17-year-old Julija, who spends her days diving for eels with her domineering father and dreaming of an escape from her provincial life. The arrival of a rich and mysterious family friend may offer a way out if it doesn’t portend something more sinister.

Mo
The official Netflix synopsis of the series reads, “In Texas, Mo straddles the line between two cultures, three languages and a pending asylum request while hustling to support his Palestinian family.” This semi-autobiographical series is inspired by Mo Amer’s life as a Palestinian refugee growing up in Houston.
The series won the Breakthrough Series award for Short Format (under 40 minutes). You can watch this series on Netflix.
Pachinko
Based on the New York Times bestseller, this sweeping saga chronicles the hopes and dreams of a Korean immigrant family across four generations as they leave their homeland in an indomitable quest to survive and thrive. The show won the Breakthrough Series awards for Long Format (over 40 minutes). It is available to stream on Apple TV+.
This Is Going to Hurt
Based on the best-selling non-fiction memoir of the same name, the series follows junior doctor Adam Kay in his chaotic job in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. As well as managing the disorder and fatigue of hospital life, from unexpectedly assisting in bloody births to dealing with the unexpected deaths of patients.
Adam must navigate his personal relationships, including with his parents who he has not come out to. All the while, the vicious cycle of working exacts a cumulative effect on his ability to handle it all. We Need to Talk About Cosby
This showtime documentary series from writer/director W. Kamau Bell offers a deeply personal exploration of Bill Cosby’s descent from “America’s Dad” to an alleged sexual predator.
Exploring the complex story of Cosby’s life and work, Bell invites comedians, educators, journalists and Cosby survivors to have a refreshingly candid, first-of-its-kind conversation about the man, his career and his crimes. Bell takes an unfiltered look at his legacy and the unexpected ramifications for an industry that enabled him.
