City of Shadows Ending Explained
The series starts with an influential business magnate being kidnapped and burned to death on the balcony of the iconic La Pedrera – Casa Milà in Barcelona, launching an intense investigation. Inspector Milo Malart is brought out of suspension to investigate the case with a new colleague, Deputy Inspector Rebeca Garrido.
As tensions rise in the city, the two get deeper into the mystery, tying high-profile targets to deeper social and psychological issues taking place for years. Early on, the two are convinced that this is the work of more than one person, and this is just going to get bigger. Although the others in the department refuse to agree, soon, another influential person, Felix Torrens, is abducted and murdered similarly.

Who is the killer? Why did they target these people?
Through intense investigation, Milo and Rebeca figure out that the perpetrators are two young siblings, Helena and Hector Guitart, who have gone through terrible losses since they were young. Once wealthy, they lost everything when their mother died, and their father couldn’t cope with the loss, resulting in them losing their house when Torrens’s company forcefully took away their home to redevelop the area.

They were eventually sent to an orphanage run by Torres, and there, he abused the two children for years. Traumatised by everything that they have gone through, they targeted all of the people who were responsible for their situation and the abuse that they faced, including Susana Cabrera and Mauricio Navarro.

Do the perpetrators face justice?
Helena and Hector are caught just as they are about to set fire to the Pope’s convoy during his visit to the Sagrada Família, but although their plans are thwarted, they end up lighting themselves on fire to make a statement and see some part of their plans through.

What happens in the end?
In the end, Milo and Rebeca get back to their own lives, but it’s clear that the two now share a close bond as Milo finally confronts the problem that Hugo, his brother, is going through.
The series highlights how power, influence and institutional coverups result in the creation of anti-establishment entities who are eventually blamed for their activities and thoughts. The perpetrator isn’t just one or two people; it’s the entire social construct that results in the creation of these entities in the first place.
