Butterfly Ending Explained

The series opens with a woman, Rebecca, doing a coup in a hotel and killing Karpov, an ambassador to South Korea. Meanwhile, David Jung is also in the same building, carrying out a covert assignment, and on his way out, he comes across Rebecca, whom he has been trying to find. Of course, Rebecca realises that it’s a trap and runs from him, and the plan falls through.

Elsewhere, Caddis realises that some of their operatives are selling sensitive information from the company to the US intelligence and tries to understand who else is involved in the plan. Caddis realises that someone else has been trying to thwart their plans and puts their best heads on trying to find who it is. Meanwhile, Daniel removes all traces of himself from the scene and disappears, eventually visiting his friend and asking him for a fake passport while Rebecca promises to take care of the person who destroyed her mission.

Eventually, Rebecca does bump into David when she is unknowingly asked to kill him, and the two try to reunite. However, it’s a long road ahead, and although David is open to them reconnecting, Rebecca has her doubts. As Juno and Oliver start to look into David, she is left baffled as to how he can still be alive. However, she is determined to get rid of him and hires another assassin, Gun, to get rid of him.

With Eun-ju now being followed by Juno’s men, David and Rebecca go out to save her and after a dangerous fight with several men, including Gun, David, Rebecca, Eun-ju and their daughter are able to get out safely. Although David is hurt, they are all happy to not be dead. In the train, Rebecca is incensed to learn that David has a new family that she didn’t know about, but he isn’t interested in that conversation for the moment becuase his priority is keeping all of them safe.

Gun eventually finds Yong-shik and, after killing him, learns about David’s plan to leave the country from Busan. As Rebecca becomes a part of David’s family, forming a bond with his young daughter Min-hee, Juno sells Rebecca out to Gun in hopes of getting to David through her. Juno’s men end up finding the family and a fight ensues. David and Rebecca are able to get the upper hand and after Oliver is caught, he tells them that Juno is the one who set David up 9 years ago that resulted in him fleeing and leaving Rebecca behind to save her life.

Why did Caddis want Karpov dead?

David questions Oliver about Caddis’s hand in all of this, asking whether Caddis was illegally smuggling information about Ukraine to Russia through Karpov and, eventually, he breaks, telling him that the CIA found out about this thanks to him. Caddis killed Karpov because he was the only person who knew about this and they got rid of him before the CIA got too close.

Is David able to stop Juno?

David learns from Oliver that Dawson is doing an investigation of the information selling and decides to hand the evidence over to him, while we learn that Juno was actually trained by Dawson before she turned for the enemy. Dawson is incensed about the situation, and more so because he thinks that Juno was behind David surviving the attack on him 9 years ago. David works out a deal with Dawson in a busy food street and promises to get information on Juno in exchange for immunity for him and Rebecca.

With a clear goal in mind, Rebecca and David break into Juno’s home and paints it as if Juno doesn’t trust him to break their bond and create distrust. Later, David tells Dawson that there is a mole in the CIA and plants evidence to throw Juno off the scent. It works in Dawson’s favour when he catches the information exchange red-handed while Juno is left to doubt that Oliver is the “classified witness” mentioned in the memorandum.

With tension rising between Juno and Oliver, things take a turn when David and Rebecca manipulates him and he truly becomes a witness for the CIA.

Rebecca, meanwhile, makes up with Juno after the former tells her that she loves her for who she is. However, as they run into David’s trap, Rebecca double crosses her and eventually, with Gun dead, ends up letting her go. In the end, the four of them have a meal together, with Rebecca seemingly accepting her new family. However, as the series comes to an end, Rebecca and Eun-ju go to the bathroom and David, after some time, goes to check up on them and finds Eun-ju on the floor, bleeding out. With Rebecca nowhere to be found, he thinks the worst as he holds his dying walk in his arms.
