Bhay: The Gaurav Tiwari Story Review
Believing in the paranormal is a personal choice that a lot of us feel conflicted with. Thus, bringing different perspectives to the game feels like the obvious first choice, which, if supported by evidence and science, could turn anyone into a believer. In Amazon MX Player’s latest horror show, we follow the real-life story of Gaurav Tiwari, a pilot turned paranormal investigator who died under mysterious circumstances in his bathroom.
It’s an interesting case for sure, one that the police determined to be a case of suicide, but believers thought was done by the paranormal entities he searched for all of his life. The series is an interesting blend of real-life footage and dramatic recreations (of sorts) and showcases Tiwari’s life from the start of his paranormal journey to its end. I think it’s an interesting story that is told, one that can make anyone curious. As someone who doesn’t believe in ghosts, I found the series to invoke a sense of curiosity as I found myself wondering whether this is a mental health thing or really a paranormal thing.

However, the biggest flaw of this series is that the ghosts are ghouls are showcased so badly that it’s hard to take it seriously. From the ghostly apparitions to the silly EMF readers and whatnot, we have watched all of this in different forms of media for years and in 2025, I find all this to be really amusing. It doesn’t invoke a sense of thrill or seriousness because it doesn’t feel even mildly believable, and it doesn’t help that the ghosts look terrible in the show.
Another issue that I found in the show is that there are simply too many threads. I simply don’t care about Irene’s haunting in this situation because it’s equally as tacky as everything else and makes the series even funnier. Koechlin is fine, but the terrible special effects are this series’ downfall. Plus, it’s difficult to believe all of the things that are dramatically included in the runtime, as it makes everything more over-the-top than it needs to be.

Karan Tacker plays Tiwari in the show, and I think he does a good job, considering the character and the situations that he finds himself in. The performances are pretty great, but with a topic like this, the execution needs to be fantastic, and that’s where the series falters heavily. What starts off as a mystery surrounding Gaurav’s death ends on a cliffhanger so obvious that it is almost shocking that this is the route the series took. Frankly, I find it a bit odd that the series does not address personal issues in Gaurav’s life, focusing instead on going completely over the top and unbelievable.
Final Thoughts

Supernatural shows are a dime and dozen, and it’s difficult to create thrills and horror through them in this day and age. However, Bhay: The Gaurav Tiwari Story seems to still be stuck in the Ssshhhh…Koi Hai era, when we were all a bit naive, and times were simpler. Now, these shows don’t work the same because we have seen better ones over the years that blend genres to leave an impact. Moreover, their executions are far better than whatever this is, which is possibly the biggest bummer of all.
