Bhagwat Chapter One: Raakshas Ending Explained

The film starts off with Vishwas Bhagwat being transferred to a small town after he beat up a criminal. Disappointed, he quickly gets neck deep into a missing person’s case wherein a young woman, Poonam, is nowhere to be found for days. He is immediately interested and starts to investigate the case, but with very little evidence to point him in the right direction, things get a bit slow.

Even then, he pushes on and eventually, from her call records, is able to find a phone number that she frequently called late at night. It’s rumoured that she was dating someone and might have run away with him, but Bhagwat still decides to get to the bottom of the situation. The phone records lead him to someone’s phone, and from there, he finds out that several other women have also been similarly missing over the course of a few years, who are all connected to Poonam in some way.

They also pay a visit to Kavita, whose number they find in the mystery phone’s call records, and from her, they learn that a friend of hers might be involved in the situation. At this time, Bhagwat thinks that this is a case of human trafficking, and soon realises that there are deeper matters at play.

On the other hand, one of the IMEI numbers that he was investigating suddenly turns out, and the police nab two young college students who tell him that they found the phone after an altercation with a man driving a scooter with a politician’s face on it. From the photos that the perpetrator left in Kavita’s studio, they realise that it’s the same man and, eventually, find Rajkumar Siritiya’s name, who has been lying to Kavita for years.

After she corroborates that it’s the same man, Bhagwat easily nabs him with his force and decides to interrogate him over the Diwali weekend. When threatened with putting his wife, Sumitra, in prison, he confesses to killing 19 women so that his wife can be spared.

Why did Rajkumar kill all of these women?

Rajkumar had no job and two wives and had to bring in the money from somewhere. Thus, telling the lie that he’s a college professor, he won women’s trust and started a relationship with them, eventually promising to marry them if they ran away with her. The truth is, he has only ever loved his second wife, Sumitra, and he killed all the other women to steal their valuables and keep up the ruse.

What is Meera’s connection to this incident?

Throughout the runtime of the film, we see Sameer’s budding relationship with Meera. Although viewers think that it’s happening in the present day, we learn in the end that the Meera incident happened years ago. In the present, Meera is the only woman who was able to escape Sameer’s clutches after she didn’t consume the cyanide capsule that he gave her and ended up in a coma after only licking it. She is now married with a young daughter, but lives in fear of what Rajkumar/Sameer did to her.

Does Rajkumar face justice in the end?

Although it initially seems as if Rajkumar will find a loophole and get out of jail, in the end, Meera arrives in court after days of anguish to testify against him and stop him from killing other women. Although the last scene tells us that Rajkumar was sentenced to prison and even a death sentence for the 19 murders, he is delaying justice by appealing to different courts in hopes of wiggling his way out of the system.
