Bhagwat Chapter One: Raakshas Review
In Bhagwat Chapter One: Raakshas, viewers will find themselves desperately seeking vengeance when 19 women are found missing over the course of several years. The film packs all the thrills in its 127-minute runtime and, for once, I found myself completely enamoured throughout the runtime without feeling an ounce of boredom at any point.
The film follows Vishwas Bhagwat, a no-nonsense and gruff cop who, after being transferred to a small town, stumbles upon a missing woman’s case that leads to more horrifying discoveries. Along with his investigation, we see a college professor named Sameer who is wooing a young local girl called Meera, and the story explores the two scenarios and where they meet.
As mentioned above, Bhagwat Chapter One: Raakshas gets its storytelling right, so much so that you are absolutely engrossed from start to finish. Arshad Warsi and Jitendra Kumar are fantastic as Bhagwat and Sameer, respectively, and each brings out their characters’ eccentricities too well. They are one of the biggest reasons why you will find yourself on the edge of your seat as the horrifying details of the case come forth.
As Bhagwat desperately tries to get to the bottom of the mystery and doesn’t leave any stone unturned, you root for him endlessly. Warsi forces you to feel for Bhagwat’s efforts because his character feels genuinely interested in solving the case, thanks to his own horrible past, which makes the case personal. You expect it to go down some familiar routes, but the reality leaves you helpless, hopeless and rather terrified.
There are not too many twists in the film, but the way it’s presented will leave viewers guessing till the end. I think Kumar makes for a really interesting actor choice for Sameer’s role, and his performance will give you goosebumps. Furthermore, the ending is satisfying yet a little heartbreaking because you expect justice to be served, but the Indian judiciary isn’t an easy nut to crack. But, there’s still hope in the end that will leave you vindicated.
In the end, thus, the film wins because of a combination of its fantastic performances and tense storytelling that creates a thrilling atmosphere. You wait with bated breath as Bhagwat unearths one shocking clue after another, and just as he seemingly gets closer to the end, he comes across another dead end. It brings forth the women’s fears of living in India in a rather conservative society and also asks the question of whether or not these women could’ve been saved if they had the chance to discuss the situation at home.
I will, however, mention here that the film doesn’t do anything unique or new, but rather it’s a combination of its good performances and the way the story is told. You will see familiar beats here and will mostly be able to figure out where it’s going, but it is still able to maintain a tense atmosphere that makes it quite entertaining.
Final Thoughts
I was thoroughly surprised by Bhagwat Chapter One: Raakshas, and it left me rather bothered about whether or not we will end up catching the perpetrator once and for all. Warsi and Kumar are the sole reasons why this film is as impactful as it turns out to be, and overall, viewers will enjoy watching this thoroughly.
