Doona: Here’s Why Bae Suzy’s Upcoming K-drama Could be More Than Just a Regular Romance

Crash Landing On You‘s director Lee Jung-hyo has already brought us an unforgettable romantic saga, and this fall, Bae Suzy in and as Doona (이두나) is going to open up a new chapter of love and affection that’s expected to have a lot more to do with one’s other personal emotions as well. Adding on to the long list of webtoon adaptations that have come out this year, and that are yet to come out even before the year heads into its final closing chapter, the upcoming Korean drama series is expected to be a pleasant watch with even more fitting cast choices.

Suzy is well known for her roles in K-dramas like Dream High, While You Were Sleeping, Vagabond, Uncontrollably Fond and more, and she last appeared in the 2020 tvN series Start-Up and the 2022 web series Anna. She’s long been known as the “Nation’s First Love” in South Korea, and the upcoming series is only going to add more fodder to that argument as proof as she’ll also be taking on a role that’s familiar to the former Miss A member – a K-pop idol. Read on to find out more about her series releasing this week.

Doona Kdrama Plot / Storyline

Having left the trail of her former glamorous celebrity life, now retired from her post of a K-pop idol, Doona was a member of the girl group Dream Sweet. The reason behind her abrupt departure from the group is a mystery, but she eventually ends up sharing the same house as Won-jun, a college student. Though strangers to each other, they gradually get pulled to each other. However, this curiosity commences on a disorderly note and it will be interesting to see how their initial confusions fade out to give way to a more peaceful coming together of the two.

Other than the obvious love track of the storyline, the show is likely to illustrate the reasons for Doona’s fallout from her professional field. There’s a good chance that the series may in this way critique the cycle of toxicity associated with the celebrity lifestyle and how young artists deal with the limelight that’s too much to handle. Reasons for the protagonist walking out on her career as an idol may further tie into the image of harsh realities intrinsically tied to the entertainment industry’s unseen face. The series is based on The Girl Downstairs webtoon created by Min Songa.

There’s an air of mystery around Suzy’s character which means that there’s a lot more to the story and its characters than what meets the eye or what has been so far reductively illustrated through the trailer and teaser videos.
