The Whole Truth (2021) Review: Sutatta Udomsilp-Starrer is The Visit But Not Really

The Whole Truth is a horror-mystery-drama movie directed by Wisit Sasanatieng and stars Sutatta Udomsilp, Nattapat Nimjirawat, and Sompob Benjathikul, alongside other cast members. The movie is 125 minutes long.

Netflix describes the movie as:

When two siblings stumble on a strange hole in the wall of their grandparents’ house, horrifying incidents reveal sinister secrets about their family.

The Whole Truth just takes so much time to get to the point. There’s an accident and almost sexual harassment and some troublesome video about Pim that takes up so much of the movie’s initial runtime. Thus, before the horrors even start you feel the weight of a somewhat boring horror movie. Either way, Mai’s accident helps the kids to get to their grandparents’ house, where The Visit finally starts.

The Whole Truth is an odd combination of The Grudge and The Visit. You know you’re jumping into an M. Night Shyamalan movie the moment a mysterious old person whom the kids have never seen before comes to visit them. You don’t know why you feel odd and uncomfortable, but the possibility of finding poop-covered adult diapers under the house is very real and very terrifying at that point.

Then, after a while, you realise that it is essentially The Visit. Grandma has a fairly heard-of disease that makes her a bit… different and oftentimes forgetful. It’s all pretty spooky and you want to know what’s up with the couple. To the movie’s benefit, at least they acknowledge that this is a very confusing situation and I am glad they at least broach the subject and don’t act like everything is hunky-dory.

And then we meet the hole in the wall. It’s the least interesting part of The Whole Truth and I wish it didn’t go down that route. The movie’s biggest positive was the children’s relationship with these weird old people. Their relationship, how the kids accept or don’t accept the grandparents, whether these are actually who they say they are, are better things to mull over than simply inserting a ghost which mostly feels like an afterthought anyway.

The next-door ghosts are just… funny. There are no two ways about it. It’s not entertaining and neither is it scary. There’s a child with blackface who throws up blood or Kayako from The Grudge. The CGI is atrocious and an overabundance of things going on on-screen is nothing short of annoying and confusing. The Whole Truth also dedicates some time behind a hit-and-run investigation which is… unnecessary.

That’s one of the greatest disadvantages of The Whole Truth movie. It juggles too many different things. It tries to bring in how rich and powerful people get away due to the law being lax, there’s revenge porn, bullying, revenge as well as a mental illness that it juggles with. All of this, on top of blackface ghost girl… and wormholes. It’s exhausting to keep up with it. And, no, the ending revelation does nothing to make things better.

The awkward thing about this movie is that it doesn’t take any time to create interesting characters whom you root for. Sure, you’re scared of the creepy grandparents, but Pim and Putt are just two other kids in a strange situation. They try to make us sympathise with them because of how much they are bullied, but in the end, you don’t really connect with them much. At least the siblings share a good bond that’s nice to watch.

Summing up: The Whole Truth

The Whole Truth

The Whole Truth is exhausting to watch. It’s about everything and nothing. It’s a drama, a social commentary movie and a horror. At the end of the day, I wanted to watch the Thai version of The Visit but got a movie that is confusing and annoying with what it is trying to be.

The Whole Truth is streaming on Netflix.
