What If Season 3 Episode 2 Recap

In episode 2, Agatha Harkness is a movie star whose quest for power brings her to discover the Celestial growing within the depths of the Earth. She wishes to take its cosmic power, resulting in her desperately trying to create a spell potent enough for the task at hand. Unfortunately, pulling off such a huge endeavour isn’t an easy feat and she realises that she will require an equally big production. She takes the help of Howard Stark, who is extremely happy to foot the bill.

However, she soon realises that the production isn’t working and, after a little input from Jarvis and Howard, she introduces the idea of including a co-star to push her mission further. To assist in this plan, she finally puts forth the name of actor Kingo, which makes Howard’s eyes glow with excitement as well!

When Kingo makes his appearance on set, Howard is dazzled by him immediately and they soon get ready to shoot the scenes. Kingo performs a very fast-paced Bollywood number (reminiscent of Ranveer Singh’s Malhari!). As Agatha and Kingo dance off against one another, it turns out that Kingo does know what Agatha is up to and is here to put her schemes to a stop. It turns into a very magical fight and the two start to attack one another. Howard Stark is left impressed and after the rest of the crew walk away, Kingo mentions that Agatha has captured the powers of all of his friends.

Although Agatha refuses to let go of his friends for now, she mentions that she needs his power to complete the spell and save everything that she cares about. However, Kingo disagrees and tells her that since Arishem made him the Prime Eternal, he needs to protect Tiamut and the lives that he will create. He refuses to betray Arishem, although Agatha has her doubts regarding his loyalty. That becomes apparent when she promises to make Howard give him a three-picture deal and he immediately agrees to help her in her mission, along with, of course, the release of his friends.

Unfortunately, Arishem sees this and tells them both that they have chosen their paths, indicating that he is coming for them.

Not wanting to waste any more time, the two of them take the idea to Howard, and the team travels to the Griffith Observatory to shoot the Third Act. When an alien spaceship emerges, it turns out that Howard knew the true identities of his two stars and was going along with their plans to save money on special effects. Now, he tells them that he would like to look into them more in exchange for helping them in their mission.

As Arishem rushes through space to destroy Agatha and Kingo, the two “actors” quickly start the ritual and after Agatha takes all of Kingo’s powers, she starts the process of taking Tiamut’s powers as well. After successfully completing her mission, she faces off against Arishem and tricks him into putting his defences down. In the aftermath of taking on the powers of two Celestials, Agatha reveals that she isn’t the reluctant hero that she was portraying previously and is ready to wield her power however she pleases.

As she sets out on a destructive path, Kingo reaches out to her to remind her that she doesn’t need the fear of everyone all over the world – she has the adoration of fans everywhere thanks to her movies. His words reach her successfully and we then see the two of them walking the red carpet for their film ‘Cosmic Love’. A nervous Kingo tells Agatha that the other Celestials are on their way after her little stunt with Arishem and Tiamut but Agatha reminds him that they all thrive on attention, indicating that she is ready to take on the challenge as and when it presents itself.

What If Season 3 Episode 2 Review

The second episode of What If Season 3 is absurd and stunning and makes for a very interesting watch. The story is unique and makes us believe in these different worlds that have their own unique problems and predicaments. I thoroughly enjoyed the different characters and their different personalities – it differentiated the episode from others and gave it its own unique quirk. The twist to Agatha and Kingo’s stories that we already know makes it thoroughly engaging without changing it around to an astronomical degree. It’s believable yet different. The humour is also fantastic, making it a very entertaining episode that pushes the bounds of this world. Although I didn’t enjoy the animation in some places and I felt like the resolution in the end was rushed, convenient and unbelievably easy, I thoroughly enjoyed the episode regardless.

What If Season 3 Episode 2 Ending Explained

What If Season 3 Episode 2: Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher
What If Season 3 Episode 2: Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher

The latest episode showcases Agatha making Howard Stark hire Kingo in order to use his power and eventually take the powers of the Celestial Tiamut. Kingo is working with another Celestial called Arishem and they are working together in order to make Tiamut take the Earth’s cosmic powers and give birth to billions of lives through the Emergence. However, it becomes quite easy to sway Kingo and Agatha eventually takes his powers and then Tiamut’s to become an all-powerful celestial being. She faces off against Arishem who was rushing to Earth to put an end to the two of them.

Agatha takes all of their powers and eventually becomes extremely powerful, eventually choosing to give birth to the Emergence anyway and becoming the villain. However, Kingo is able to realise why she is acting the way she is and asks her to be adored by her fans instead of wanting to be hated and feared. Something about what he says gets through to Agatha, who eventually lets it go and becomes the star that she always wanted to be. The end sequence showcases The Watcher with the other Celestials, indicating that they are already here for Agatha.

The message of this segment is that two people on the wrong path can choose to be good and do good for everyone if only they have people to rally by them. It’s much like the last episode but more filmy and brings forth a funnier and more tongue-in-cheek vibe to the episode.
