Manav Kaul’s Tribhuvan Mishra is a rather sweet and sensitive fellow, one that anyone would love to have as a partner. His problem, however, is that he is kind… a bit too kind. In a world where life is measured by how much money one has in one’s account, Mishraji feels a little out of place. It is also probably one of the reasons why his wife, Akashlata, and later on other women as well, fall so head over heels for him.

Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper is a dark comedy that is truly disturbing and funny – the storyline is well-written and witty and is told in a way that anyone and everyone can enjoy without feeling like they are drowning. Following righteous government worker Tribhuvan Mishra who is unable to do any shady deals to increase his income in this expensive world, the series showcases his desperation to take care of his family and eventually getting into prostitution to fulfil his monetary needs.
The series does a fantastic job of showcasing the different sides of this sordid tale – the disbelief in the eyes of anyone who realises that Mishra is the one giving services instead of receiving them, the discussion surrounding women’s sexuality and needs and then there is Mishra’s family life that slowly but surely gets affected the moment he starts to rake in more income. The societal implications and hypocrisy are discussed in such a relatable and approachable way that audiences will find themselves in thought yet will laugh at the way that they are said.

The series never showcases any side of this in a negative manner. In fact, Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper reiterates over and over again that this is something Mishra is doing out of desperation – there are no emotions attached to it. The escort business isn’t a black and white situation as most people can attest to and it’s interesting that the series points that out. Moreover, we also don’t see any of the women in a bad light; in fact, somewhere along the lines, you feel bad for everyone in this scenario where the women coming to Mishra need affection and attention from someone else who is sorely missing from their own lives. The idea that sex is something that women can enjoy too and it’s not just a tool for procreation is an idea that comes forth many times and the way that it is brought forth is a welcome change.
However, let’s not forget that Mishra, obviously, has not told his wife about how he is suddenly getting all of this extra money. I am a little confused about Mishra’s storyline here – my question is, would a shy, introverted man who has trouble speaking to women jump the gun and take up prostitution instead of trying to do anything else? I didn’t understand why he couldn’t try other things out before getting right into selling himself for money. It seemed a little desperate and forced, to be honest, and I feel like, at 9 episodes over an hour long, we could’ve at least explored something that didn’t jump the gun in such a major way.

Either way, the implications of getting into something this messy in a city like Noida are thrilling and entertaining and the creators have done a wonderful job of mixing both thrill and humour together into a perfectly baked cake. Of course, there is a police procedural side to the story as well, as there often is, and Inspector Haider Ali is a funny addition who tries his level best to solve this case. Interestingly enough, we get a small glimpse into his character as well, as well as the supporting characters, that round them out as real people. The humour and light vibes don’t mar the experience of this being a thrilling endeavour with a bit of drama mixed in.
Kaul is the Tribhuvan Mishra and he is one great performer (pun intended). He transports us into Mishra’s thoughts and feelings almost as soon as we start the series and as his desperation increases, you can slowly see his naivety and innocence slipping out of his grasp. Naina Sareen is a sweetheart and leaves your heart aching for Ashoklata’s ordeal. Tillotama Shome and Subhrajyoti Barat are an odd couple and both are so good in their respective roles that they stand out in every frame. Barat, especially, is both menacing and oddly funny and makes for a great watch.
Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper Review: Final Thoughts

We don’t always get dark comedy shows that are relatable, funny and oddly emotional at times. The series nails its storytelling, plot progression and character arcs in such a way that it’s a treat to watch. Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper series is a rare show that discusses interesting topics in a way that is empathetic but also hilarious which makes for a riot of an NSFW watch.
