The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 10 Recap
The episode opens with Yoshiki in complete shock over Hikaru’s apparent death. In desperation, he even tries to reattach Hikaru’s severed head, and once he succeeds, the overwhelming stress causes him to faint. Both Yoshiki and Hikaru are later taken to the hospital, but while Yoshiki regains consciousness, Hikaru remains in a coma. Meanwhile, it becomes evident that Tanaka has his own hidden motives in pursuing Hikaru.
Eventually, Hikaru wakes up, though noticeably weaker than before. Rie questions this sudden drop in strength, and they realize it stems from the body part Hikaru had previously given to Yoshiki. Though they manage to return to their usual selves, the looming threat surrounding them hasn’t gone away.

The episode also dives into a chilling backstory years ago, where the villagers controlled population growth by aborting children using a mercury-based drug. Yoshiki digs deep into the history of this curse but still struggles to grasp the full truth. His search leads him and Hikaru to the Indo family shrine, which is a disturbing structure adorned with wooden carvings of human heads. When Hikaru touches them, painful memories resurface.
The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 11 Review

The episode begins with Yoshiki finally building up the courage to go talk to his father about the Indo family curse. It is apparent that when Yoshiki was young, he had a very good relationship with his dad, but after growing up, they grew apart. Yoshiki outright asks him about the Indo family curse, and he unwillingly reveals the secret. Apparently, there used to be an Indo family head who asked for something outrageous after his wife died to Nonuki-sama. He claimed that if Nonuki-sama accepts his wish, then he will offer everyone else’s head. His wish comes true in a grotesque way, and many villagers died mysteriously from then on.
Since then, every member of the Indo family must go to the mountain to offer an apology every five years for their sin. Sadly, they never really knew that these apologies don’t really matter because Nonuki-sama, who lives in the mountain, never cared about this ritual. Later, Hikaru also contemplates how many people have died as an offering to him. But there is still one mystery left; after the sacrifices, bad things indeed stopped happening.

If that were the case, what was Nonuki-sama doing before the mass death happened? But this was not the highlight of this episode. It becomes very clear that Hikaru is going through a very prominent identity crisis, and he is getting weaker day by day. Not only does it stop him from protecting Yoshiki from other monsters, but it also unleashes the animalistic nature within himself.
In this episode, Hikaru almost becomes unhinged and tries to hurt Yoshiki. This shocks Hikaru a lot, and he contemplates whether he should return to the mountains because that will ultimately stop all the problems for his friends and Yoshiki.
Verdict

Today’s episode was really profound because it finally sheds light on the mystery of the village. Now we know why the Indo family had to bear the burden of going to the mountain. But there are still some mysteries that remain unsolved, and only time will tell whether Hikaru will go back to the loneliness he once faced or whether he will remain with Yoshiki within the village.
