The Guest Review
In The Guest, 20 episodes are required to tell absolutely nothing and entirely too much, and it all comes down to a very confusing and melodramatic story that will leave you infuriated by the end. The storyline is quite simple, and I am quite sure all of this could’ve been wrapped up in less than 10 hours. But, no – at almost 20 hours (a little less), things don’t take entirely enough twists and turns to warrant a watch like this.
The series follows Silvia and Sonia, two women who share an interesting past. However, there’s also a connection that Sonia has with Lorenzo that eventually comes out and all of this is told with so many unnecessary inclusions that you question your sanity by the end of almost every episode. The story is simple, but it’s made to feel complicated to the extent that you ask yourself whether you are stupid.

As mentioned previously, the series chooses to extend the runtime for no discernible reason because the plot, by the end of it, brings nothing interesting to the table. Sure, there are a few revelations that are interesting, but it doesn’t warrant this huge runtime. Most of the side stories remain half-baked and unexplored, and you wonder what happened to them sometimes. But then again, it’s just so simple that it probably could’ve been showcased in one episode.
I think the biggest problem with the series of this size is that it doesn’t go all in. Showcasing a crazy “ex” is great if you go all in. It’s fun even if it’s unbelievable, and guilty pleasures exist. But The Guest is so unbelievably tame that it’s laughable to watch. Everyone just makes the objectively worst decisions at every turn, and we are simply expected to watch it unfold as if it’s the most interesting and scandalous thing ever.

There’s not much else to say because the content itself is so obvious and forgettable. The performances are fine, and Carmen Villalobos does a great job as Sonia, but that’s about it. I don’t understand the characters’ motivations, nor do I understand the point. Every character is unlikable, with very little morality, and it doesn’t make us want to root for them. I felt abject rage every time they did something completely crazy that no normal person would do, and that’s not the feeling that I expect while watching a psychological thriller show.
Final Thoughts

The Guest is terrible, only because it’s too long to truly be engaging or even a guilty pleasure. I guess if it was bold enough to go full crazy, I would’ve understood. But, as it stands, the series doesn’t warrant losing your precious time over.
