The Eternaut Ending Explained
The story starts as Juan Salvo and his friends gather for their weekly poker night at his friend Alfredo Favalli’s house. Suddenly, it starts to “snow” and everyone at the house looks out in amusement. However, that soon turns into horror as they realise that people outside have fallen to the ground dead. They quickly understand that there’s something going on with the “snow” and later realise that it’s ash raining from the sky.
Panicked, Salvo decides to go out and look for his wife and daughter, but when he reaches his wife’s house, he is disappointed and scared to learn that his daughter is not with her. The two of them decide to look for her together while the other survivors at Favalli’s house decide on what to do. Although Favalli is unsure about leaving the safety of his house at first, they decide to go to his other house on a nearby island for safety. In the midst of this, Salvo and Favalli learn that there are giant beetle-like creatures lurking among them.

As Clara returns on her own, seemingly unharmed, she starts to act oddly. Her parents are concerned but otherwise unhappy. Meanwhile, Favalli realises that the Earth’s magnetic fields have disappeared and the ash is particles from the Van Allen radiation belt raining down on them. As they make their way out to safety, they seek refuge in a mall and the next morning are shocked to learn that the sky has cleared, although the sea is nowhere to be seen.
Finally, Favalli, with some hope, the group cheers, but are soon attacked by other humans out of nowhere. They put up a fight and are eventually taken in by soldiers who take them to Campo de Mayo. They find stability and safety there, but Favalli is asked by the military to go on a dangerous mission in search of broadcast equipment. It’s a risky move, and Salvo, Omar and Lucas accompany him to keep him safe. The mission is successful, but soon they realise that they have walked into a trap. They can get out just in time, but Salvo decides to check out a big blue light from a closeby park area.

He and another soldier go off to find out what’s going on while the rest go back home to warn the others. In a shocking twist, Salvo sees an entire “township” of humans and aliens, but the humans seem like they are being controlled by someone or something. In the last few minutes of the runtime, Salvo realises that he has lived this reality before and thus everything has been feeling so familiar to him and also sees the actual alien controlling it all. The last scene showcases him realising that Clara might also be controlled by the aliens and that all of this has been a trap all along.
