She Said Maybe Review: In this Netflix film, Mavi grows up in Germany, unaware of her past, until she learns she belongs to an old Turkish noble family. Suddenly surrounded by luxury, she must balance the allure of status with the strain it places on her relationship and identity.

She Said Maybe Review
She Said Maybe is almost like a fairytale where an ordinary woman suddenly finds out she is the heir to an extremely rich and prestigious family. The premise will remind you of The Princess Diaries, and things go very much in that zone, but with a bit more realistic touch. Things begin as Mavi is seen leading a happy life with a very loving boyfriend, Can, who plans to propose to her. She knows about his proposal, but is not sure whether she is ready to say yes and start a family yet.
Thankfully, before the proposal could happen, Can gifted her with a trip to Turkey, where Mavi is originally from. However, things become pretty chaotic when Mavi gets to know that she actually belongs to an uber-rich Turkish family, who had no idea of her existence till now. Now that her grandmother knows of Mavi’s presence, she does everything in her power to make her stay and prepare her to be worthy of the Bilgin family.
This is where things get complicated, because before this trip, Mavi was leading a pretty content life with her boyfriend, but she was also starving to have her own family. But now that she has a new lineage, what about the past connections that she has built all her life?

The movie begins and ends in the exact same way, one would think, following a very known and predictable trajectory. From the very beginning, the movie runs on cliches and follows established tropes, but it does it in a way that is not cringeworthy. I must mention how the actors also do a convincing job of transporting you to the luxurious world of Turkey and successfully portray the complex relationships they have.

At its core, this story is about Mavi’s quest to understand her own self and find out about what she truly wants in the end. In a true hero’s journey fashion, she goes on this trip, rediscovers her ideals, and learns the importance of love in a brand new way. Perhaps the film’s strongest aspect is its stunning portrayal of Turkish landscapes, blending the nation’s rich historical past with the allure of its glamorous modern world.

However, I must reaffirm the fact that it has nothing fresh to offer because we have all seen a movie or series like this. It follows the familiar lane of a poor girl who suddenly discovers her wealth, forcing her to choose between the freedom of her past life and the lure of immense money and social prestige. The ending is also highly predictable and fails to leave a lasting impact once the credits roll.
Verdict

All in all, as a one-time watch, this movie works. The attractive cast and the glossy portrayal of high-society life provide enough intrigue to hold attention. However, it offers nothing particularly fresh or thought-provoking. This is a fairly average romantic drama that delivers exactly what one can expect.
