My Unorthodox Life Season 2 Review: Julia Haart’s Messy Divorce and Losing Control Over Her Kids

My Unorthodox Life Season 2 is a reality TV series that follows the Haarts, a formerly ultra-Orthodox Jewish family adjusting to life in Manhattan while coming to terms with the life they left behind. The first season premiered on Netflix on 14 July 2021 and the latest season is released on 2nd December 2022.

Between matriarch Julia, her children Batsheva, Miriam, Shlomo and Aron — and of course, honorary family member Robert Brotherton, the tight-knit family brings glamour, never-ending drama and some laughs, to the viewers. There are 9 episodes in the second season, with a runtime of about 40-48 minutes.

In this new season, Julia is forced to navigate yet another avalanche of personal and professional challenges. When she and her husband surprised the world with a blindsiding removal as CEO – followed by filing for a divorce – Julia is left to battle for control of her business empire, which quickly turns contentious.

Will she lose everything or gain more than she could ever imagine? Within her family, Julia must find a way to reconnect with her daughter Batsheva, guide her daughter Miriam in her first committed relationship with a woman, and dissuade her son Aron who is determined to drop out of secular school to attend Orthodox yeshiva full-time.

If you have watched the trailer of the show then you must have come prepared to see all the petty drama between Julia and Silvio. Surprisingly, the first episode shows them very amicably parting with each other and promising to keep up their partnership at Elite World Group etc. But soon that turns into an ugly fight that we have seen in many reality shows.

While the last season made some viewers realise that Julia was trying to push her perspective of freedom or her idea of a good life, on everyone. Well, it was not a very popular opinion but this season certainly solidifies it. It is commendable how she made a good life for herself but everyone’s journey is not going to be the same as hers.

That’s where Batsheva and her conflict come into place. She doesn’t really follow the matriarch blindly like the other kids and her difference of opinion is something that the mother cannot control. Likewise, with Aron, she keeps telling him she is doing it for his own good and that he is too young to realise the reality of things.

And contradicts her own philosophy of freedom and as she said herself, he is a growing kid and will eventually realise what he needs in life – whether it’s secular or religious. There was some conflict between her and Miriam regarding getting married and I believe this is the start where we would be seeing more differences in ideologies between them if there will be more seasons.

Julia has a perception of freedom but at the same time, she wants to keep everything under her control. If you stray from the path approved by her then she is gonna continuously talk you out of it, to her way. Also, until last season I somewhat empathised or even admired her vision but now she just looks like an annoying know-it-all, who wouldn’t stop talking ever.

Summing Up: My Unorthodox Life Season 2

This season shows how the dynamics among the Haart family members are changing. The mother always pushed them to be free and independent but now that they are actually venturing out, she is trying to hold the reins. Also, I do not understand how you portray that you are going through such a tragedy and then a day later going to a matchmaker to find a date or even worse – hook up with someone younger than your own kids.

Robert and his boyfriend Ra’ed are a delight to watch, they give us a big respite from all the Haart drama. However, it felt really unfair to tell him that he wasn’t being a good friend when all he has done is to invite them into his home and always try to make the other person feel better. Overall, this show feels more grounded and relatable than other reality series and would rather watch it casually, for a dose of trashy drama.
