Recap of My Unorthodox Life Season 1
The series starts off with a quick introduction to the head of the family – Julia Haart and her escape from the ultra-Orthodox Jewish family. She talks about the Fundamentalist mentality that is the issue in many religions and we move on to her present life. Her children who have grown up in that culture, are also adjusting to their lives outside.
Her younger daughter Miriam is easily getting on with the outside world and owning up to her bisexuality, while the eldest daughter, Batsheva is still coming around to the idea of wearing a pair of pants – which is considered a sin in her religion. Her second child, Shlomo is shown dipping his toes in the dating pool for the first time and the youngest son, Aron, still living according to the life, they left.
Batsheva resists a predictable parenting plan with her husband Ben, who wants to have kids. While Julia agonizes that her juicy memoir will upset her children and consults Miriam. The family objects to the explicit content of the book and tensions arise between Batsheva and Julia again, as the past memories of abandonment also come up. When Julia decided to leave the community and her daughter was left alone.
Apart from the family, Julia taps a matchmaker for Robert, who hasn’t dated in years due to his insecurities. He didn’t want to come out of his comfort zone and when he is finally pushed to face his fears, we get to know more about him. He was adopted right after birth and takes this opportunity to find his birth mother.
He was apprehensive at first but the reunion went well than expected and gave closure to both parties. Julia may have left the community but she still has a cordial relationship with her ex-husband, as they share the custody of Aron. Towards the end of the series, we see how even he has found a partner for himself and warming up his children to the idea of his second marriage.
The series showed how Julia Haart is revolutionising the fashion industry and also becoming an inspiration for other people, who might be in a similar situation as she once was. Batsheva and Ben have some differences in their marriage but in the end, they come around, to understanding one another.
Miriam is looking forward to her career in tech and exploring her sexuality, till she finds the one. Shlomo is slowly opening up to the new world in front of him while looking for a match and Aron is seen contemplating between the two very different worlds.
