My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 21 Review- The Lovely Lady Nagant

Since most reviews of this season have been extremely positive to the point that they can seem fanboy-ish, let’s start with one negative that needs to be addressed about this episode- the show doesn’t have an apparent direction at this moment. Sure, Deku and the other heroes going vigilante to stop All For One is interesting, but the show has not set a path for itself to get there believably and for Deku to be the one to end him once and for all. Sure, he is extremely strong now, but is he strong enough to beat Shigaraki and All For One in this state?

The state of the world is uncertain and a little confusing, and no better example of that exists other than Lady Nagant herself. She wasn’t a bad character to be introduced at this point in time, but she couldn’t quite hit the heights the show wanted her to. Her backstory is unique, but she doesn’t have much going beyond that. Everything about her could be predicted before you head into this episode, and while predictability is overhated, too much of it can lead to the media becoming boring.

That said, My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 21 was still great, and I had a lot of fun watching it. The involvement of Chisaki Kai, or Overhaul, was one of the more interesting parts of it, and it is great to see him getting involved at this point in the story. Despite this not being a popular opinion, I loved the first arc of Season 4 and bringing him back into the fold after what Shigaraki did to him sets us up nicely for a future confrontation. He might end up being another of the show’s increasing number of characters that lay forgotten now, but at least he got this.

The reveal of Deku’s quirks continued in My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 21. This time, it was another cool one with a lot of potential, depending on how Deku uses it. The fight between Deku and Lady Nagant was a good one because you knew that if Lady Nagant was fighting solely to kill Deku, she could have done so a hundred times before he even got close to her. Such restraint is usually reserved for heroes, so it was nice seeing it from a villain for once.

Another factor that made this fight, and My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 21 in general, this enjoyable was the animation. There is a literal difference between night and day between the show’s past and present, but it is doing some very cool things with the darker tones and lack of colour that it has right now. The dead silent environment also leads to a lot more destruction and chaos happening, which adds to the drama. We even had All Might show some of his old flares here, so this was still an overall net positive.
Verdict
My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 21 did not touch the heights of this season and had a few tonal and directional issues, but it was still a highly interesting watch. It also looked pretty great!
