Masaba Masaba Season 2 Review: Romance, Laughs and PQ!

Masaba Masaba is a slice-of-life TV series directed by Sonam Nair and stars Masaba and Neena Gupta, along with Rytasha Rathore, Neil Bhoopalam, Kusha Kapila, Armaan Khera, Ram Kapoor, Barkha Singh and Kareema Barry.

Netflix describes the series:

Real life mom-daughter duo Neena and Masaba Gupta play versions of themselves in this playful, fictional peek into their lives in fashion and film.

– Masaba Masaba Season 2 Review Does Not Contain Spoilers –

2020 saw fun and relatability in Masaba Masaba; Masaba and Neena Gupta’s dynamic duo made us laugh and cry as they went through the various hurdles in their lives that seem all too familiar to us.

Going through another set of hurdles in the second season, as well as some of her past troubles coming to haunt her, the newest addition to this slice-of-life series is as delightful and emotional as its first iteration, and you won’t be able to look away from the enigmatic Masaba or the charming Neena.

Ok, so first things first – Masaba Masaba season 2 brings forth many new things for Masaba, her struggles to stay relevant and find herself, as well as Neena’s struggle to make an impact in the industry which isn’t in the mood to take her back. As Masaba comes to terms with what she wants and what makes her ‘Masaba’, you find hope and confidence along with her.

masaba masaba season 2

Masaba Gupta has truly made an impact in the fashion industry, and regardless of whether or not the show follows her real life to the T, it definitely does bring forth some real and relatable situations that happen in everyone’s lives. Of course, not everyone thinks about opening a fashion line, but you get my point.

Just like the first season, Masaba Masaba season 2 takes care of the journey that our titular protagonist goes through and tries to make a point through it. She faces anxiety, insecurity, mood changes, and the pressures of starting a family and juggling these various aspects, all the while trying to stay relevant in a constantly changing social dynamic. It’s not easy, it’s not meant to be, but with the correct attitude and with lots of love and laughter, you can definitely hustle through it.

On the other hand, we have Neena Gupta, whose struggle is somewhat similar yet different from that of her daughter. She is the constant voice of reason behind her daughter’s erratic decisions, and she doesn’t let Masaba forget the struggles of making a bad decision in the industry. It’s a necessary reminder because, as we know, she herself faced a lot of flak for her life choices.

As she struggles to maintain her relationship with her daughter, who has had enough of her mother’s nagging, she struggles to find her footing in the industry once more. And, just like last time, we see the problems that she has to face while doing everything in her power to work. You feel bad for Neena and angry on her behalf. However, the real inspiration is how she takes it in her stride and moves forward, regardless of what happens.

Masaba Masaba season 2 focuses on various social issues and brings the online scene to the show. The series focuses on how social media and PR are changing the game, and there’s more to the world of entertainment than just hard (and good) work. It’s an interesting addition to the show, one that we obviously knew about, but is a good addition nonetheless.

These points keep the series relevant and keep it in tune with today’s world.

masaba masaba season 2

The series, much like life, starts off with a disaster and is full of drama and quirk. We love Masaba’s world – it’s funny and dramatic. Its 7 episodes fly by with laughter and tears because Masaba’s life and the way that she handles problems are just so entertaining. As I had mentioned in the season 1 review, this is an easy-breezy watch. The series is self-aware and knows what people like and dislike in the media that they consume.

However, I do have a personal gripe. Masaba Masaba season 2 can sometimes get a little preachy. I mean, it’s funny and relatable, sure, but there are some moments where one or more characters share unnecessary wisdom that just feels too much. Moreover, there’s an entire scene about a destination wedding that just bogs the runtime.

It started off fine and added some conflict in Masaba’s life (as if she didn’t have enough of that already), but then it just went on a tangent into directions that were totally unnecessary. I feel like it was only a ploy to pad the runtime a bit and add that extra episode. Anyway, it ended up making Masaba realise what’s important, so I guess it worked out well for her in the end!

Tons of new characters are added this time around again, and we see many guest appearances as well. I won’t spoil who in my Masaba Masaba season 2 review, but they’re quite funny and entertaining. New actors included introduced this time around include Kusha Kapila, Armaan Khera, Ram Kapoor, Barkha Singh and Kareema Barry.

All of the new actors are fantastic and play their characters very well. Everyone is just so dramatic and over the top, and it’s great to watch them play these crazy characters, especially when you’re in the mood for some laughs and thirsty talks!

Masaba and Neena Gupta, again, shine in this series. Neena Gupta, obviously, is great; there’s nothing that I can say more about her acting chops. However, Masaba does a fantastic job at bringing this version of her character forward. She’s just so good with her character that it almost feels like I am watching the actual person living her life and becoming the ‘king’.

Rytasha Rathore and Neil Bhoopalam come back for the second season as Gia and Dhairya and are as delightful as ever. Gia and Masaba’s friendship is just so sweet and grounds these two characters who are, otherwise, boss ladies. They are always there for each other, but honestly, the real bestie crown belongs to Gia, who stands beside her friend like a rock as she bungles her way through her life. Also, where are they making men like Dhairya these days?

Summing Up: Masaba Masaba Season 2

masaba masaba season 2

Filled with fun, laughter, and some emotional moments, Masaba Masaba season 2 is the perfect bite-sized series to watch if you’re not in the mood to do anything this weekend. It’s relatable, sweet and hopeful and is also rather romantic. The best, however, is Neena and Masaba Gupta’s relationship, where they constantly fight with each other but eventually find their way to each other.

Masaba Masaba is streaming on Netflix.
