Kaushaljis VS Kaushal Review
The characters in Kaushaljis VS Kaushal are extremely rude, regardless of who they are. From hypocritical son Yug to the parents, Sangeeta and Kaushal, who apparently say the worst things to one another. Fresh off watching Mrs last week on Zee5, it’s further annoying to watch both Yug and Kaushal pile on Sangeeta for inconsequential things. Everyone throws insults at one another, to the point that you feel awkward whenever they are around each other, anticipating something hurtful at every turn. The music in the background is light and quirky but whatever is happening on-screen feels very disheartening instead of humorous.
The unfortunate thing, however, is that this is the reality in a lot of Indian households. The problem I majorly have is with Yug, who is apparently a young man living a “hip” and “modern” life but has such an antiquated outlook that it’s simply cringy to witness. The problem isn’t that he is having an existential crisis at his parents’ divorce. It’s the things that he says surrounding this that are totally inappropriate. People also constantly roll their eyes at the older generation not understanding some modern languages and things, which I found to be extremely mean-spirited and cruel.

The dialogues and interactions, especially among the younger generation, don’t feel organic or relatable in any way. Some moments are extremely over-the-top and forced, clearly added to incite the viewers’ feelings. There are also quite a few bloated moments and too many unnecessary songs added to pad the runtime. At 2+ hours, we could’ve had a tighter and more to-the-point narrative that drove the point straight home. I also found the more nuanced moments, especially with Kiara’s conflicts and her interest in Yug’s family, to falter. The way the conversations happen doesn’t feel organic and it feels like a script is being replayed instead of watching reality unfold onscreen.

That being said, Ashutosh Rana and Sheeba Chaddha are fantastic in their roles. They get nasty sometimes, but their bickering is amusing sometimes, especially when they try to impress Kiara. They have a chaotic energy to them and share good chemistry with one another. Pavail Gulati and Isha Talwar’s performances dimmed in front of them and their dialogues were a bit awkward as well. I also found the ending to be a bit contrived, complete with a long monologue in front of a judge. Sheeba Chaddha is fantastic though.
Final Thoughts

Kaushaljis VS Kaushal is an extremely over-the-top and dramatic family film about a bickering couple wanting to break up with an added layer of parenthood. The film has its funny moments, and the chemistry between Chaddha and Rana is fantastic. However, I think it’s extremely bloated the runtime is too long to keep us invested for over 2 hours of the film.
