Kaiju No 8 Episode 5 Review: A new action, Sci-Fi anime is here, and we are absolutely thrilled about it. Let us see how the third episode of this brand-new series went.
Kaiju No. 8 Overview
Kaiju No. 8 stands out as a remarkable manga by the skilled Matsumoto Naoya. Taking the role for the anime adaptation are directors Miya Shigeyuki and Kamiya Tomomi, while scriptwriting duties and series composition fall under the capable hands of Ookouchi Ichirou. Gou Fumiyuki, known for his work on titles like Blue Lock, Mieruko-chan, and Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo, assumes the role of music director. Bringing the visuals to life is Production I.G, renowned for their work on series such as Haikyuu!! and Kuroko no Basket.
In terms of the songs, the opening theme “Abyss” is performed by YUNGBLUD, adding a distinctive energy to the series. Meanwhile, the closing theme “Nobody” comes from OneRepublic, perfectly complementing the anime.
Episode 5 of Kaiju No. 8 can also be called the 5th episode of Kaijuu 8-gou (怪獣8号).
I have tried my best to keep the review as spoiler-free as possible, but there are certain elements that I had to mention to give proper feedback.

Kaiju No 8 Episode 5 Review: A Much-Needed Break
The results are out, and as a shock to everyone, Kafka Hibino manages to pass his exams even when everyone, including us, thought he would not. Not only he but even Reno passed with flying colours, and now both of them can go for active duty after training. The overall results of the competition are not very surprising, as Kikoru came first. Even though she accepts her position and the accolade, she still hates the fact that she has not earned her place. Kikoru knows that Kafka should be in her position, but she reveals nothing for the betterment of all.
The reason why Kafka got selected even when he gave a below-average performance on the test is because of Vice Captain, Hoshina. He thought Kafka did a decent job at analysing the weak points of all the kaiju and supporting the team. Plus, he also finds Kafka’s antics funny, so this also heavily influenced his decision.
Today’s episode was a much-needed breather from all the fight and competition. Here, we see Kafka making new friends and comrades who will fight alongside him. He blends with them properly, and they too, are supportive of him. Kafka, here, comes off like a loving older brother who acts like a kid full of superficial wisdom. He cares for his teammates like a guardian, joking with them, but also willing to go to great lengths to protect them.
Towards the end, we see a Kaiju has attacked, and Kafka will have to attend his first mission in the middle of the night. So we can expect a great many things from the next episode. Another key point here is how Hoshina is not as happy-go-lucky as he portrays because he is the only one who actually senses the oddness of Kafka’s presence. Let us just hope that even if Hoshina finds out about Kafka, he will not report him to be experimented on.
Verdict
I liked this episode and its peace amidst the funny stunts of Kafka. He keeps you entertained with his jokes and inability to match others throughout the episode, while still working harder than anyone. It is great that he is aware of his shortcomings but still has the heart and will to do better, nonetheless.
