The film follows the journey of bringing the first test tube baby to life from the perspective of a young woman- Jean Purdy. This nurse and embryologist, stuck with scientist Robert Edwards and surgeon Patrick Steptoe until the end of the journey and left a mark of her own on this incredible treatment for infertility. While their journey surely wasn’t easy- having to go against society, the church and even the scientific world- it was fulfilling in ways only those who were part of it could explain.

The film beautifully captures the hurdles this team of scientists faces throughout their journey and leaves you marvelling at the wonderful side of science. The journey wasn’t easy for anyone- be it the scientists or the people taking part in it as subjects, and their difficulties are shown in this film. You will surely get engrossed in the film as it mixes both the truth and some drama to give you an entertaining documentary-like film.

The actors delivered a wonderful performance in every scene and we can see many emotional turmoils they each go through during their research. Scientific research isn’t easy to begin with, and when you have to face the contempt of the world that points its fingers at you, things only get harder. On one hand, they saw the hate of the world, but on the other side, they also saw the hopeful eyes of many women who wanted to embrace motherhood.

The film has beautifully embraced the ’60s and ’70s in the film through many elements. But it doesn’t just stop at the set-up, the costumes, or the equipment, it also extends to the people and their mindset. It is the people in this film that take you back in time as you see a different view of the world throughout the film. The way motherhood is shown in the film and the thoughts of women back in the day are different from the world today which may be hard for some to relate to.

However, it doesn’t diminish the magic that baby Louise Joy Brown created with her birth as the first test tube baby. The way in which some of these scenes are captured is simply beautiful and will move your heart as some may even feel a few tears in your eyes. And the much-expected after-story and real pictures of the scientists only add up as the cherry on the cake. The bond shared by these three scientists is moving and the importance Jean is given by her teammates for her resilience towards the project is why we see this journey through her eyes.
