Inside Job Part 2 Review: Binge-Worthy Successor With a Slight Pacing Issue

While the emotional department in Reagan’s life takes a turn in Inside Job Part 2, her deadlines and coping placebos keep piling on as always. The second season of the adult workplace animated comedy series has 8 episodes as opposed to its predecessor of 10 episodes created by Shion Takeuchi along with Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) and Mike Hollingsworth (BoJack Horseman) joining the team as executive producers.

The former team at Cognito Inc. is reprised by actors like Lizzy Caplan, Christian Slater, Clark Duke, Tisha Campbell, John DiMaggio, Bobby Lee, and Brett Gelman voicing the characters. Adam Scott joins them as the new guy Ron Stadler, who may (or may not) be rivals with Caplan’s Reagan.

Netflix’s official log-line for the second outing reads:

Rand (Reagan’s father) is back in control of Cognito Inc., totally messing everything up, and Reagan is ready to kick some m*********ing ass. If only this annoying deal with Ron Stadler, the mind-erasing genius for the Illuminati, would stop getting in the way.

Yay for more adult animations making their way to Netflix this year and retaining their charm in the second round as well. The anticipated season two picks up Reagan’s crisis of her father usurping her chance at Cognito Inc’s CEO title. She thinks of all means possible to overthrow his leadership and even joins a new therapy group, ‘Anonymous Anonymous’, that came into being after her father’s takeover as a coping mechanism for many.

Through these trials of a staged mutiny that never comes to her avail, she meets Ron Stadler from the archrival company Illuminati. If there’s anything in common between them, it’s not just their sketchy roles in two counterpart corporations of the shadow government but also their brokenness due to their strenuous jobs.

Over the season, our favourite workplace ‘Gang’ comes closer while saving the world as usual and packing in hilariously shocking (or are they?) conspiracies surrounding visually non-ageing A-list Hollywood stars and more. Even though these head-scratching revelations are ample in number and are evenly spread out over the season, Part 2 mostly keeps an eye on internal issues and goes relatively easy on the conspiracies compared to the first outing.

This season, more shades of Reagan’s personality are fleshed out, and you can’t stop yourself from falling for her again. Another glimmering highlight in the Reagan arena is her friendship with Brett, which is mutually platonic. Thankfully, the second instalment doesn’t mess it up by sprinkling hints of romance in their relationship either, rather choosing to strengthen it. An insight into Brett’s personal life makes the most of its duration, but other inclusions challenge the show’s pacing.

A full-on episode is dedicated to Myc’s origins, and though it has its place in the story, it slows it down too. Some generic changes or developments in the character arcs are evident, but they’re still enjoyable because the characters are fully aware of these cliches and poke fun at them. The self-deprecating humour works its charm in this setting. One-liner comic (and calculated) eruptions settled in reality, and (debatable) accuracy hit the adult demographic like a wrecking ball and made the most of their time.

Inside Job Part 2: Worth the Watch?

Absolutely! It’s the perfect laid-back and chill binge option for the weekend. As mentioned before, it loses its pace in some places compared to the first season despite the fewer episodes, but it’s still nothing you can’t take. The series keeps up its tone of workplace humour while half-heartedly, and quite relatably, slandering the environment.

If you’re one of those viewers who’s sick of their own office or have any other work-related headaches that haven’t found their outlet yet, this show is your quick remedy for the same. It’ll do the job of making your insides (hopefully the pun lands) feel better with its feel-good temperament and a bunch of loveable main characters. The finale will leave you in awe of what’s to come next in Reagan’s life, with the hope it gets picked up for another season because I’m not ready to let go of Reagan yet, especially now that the show has invested in world-building this season too.

Inside Job Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
