His Dark Materials Season 3 Premiere Review

After a very long wait with a cliffhanger at the end of the second season that kept us wondering about where Lyra is headed next, we finally have the first two episodes of His Dark Materials Season 3 drop and, yes, they are incredibly good!

His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 1 opens with a monologue, something that fans will realise happened in the first season too where we were introduced to the history and the context of the show. In the third season, the opening is dedicated to telling us the story of the Authority against whom we will see a war raging soon. Following that up, we have Will looking out for a missing Lyra. But, where is Lyra?

The end credits scene from His Dark Materials Season 2 introduces us to Lyra’s setting where we realise that her hearing Roger’s voice in a vast deserted land was not just a dream but, a signal that her friend is stuck in the Land of the Dead. When Lyra wakes up in a remote location surrounded by mountains and water bodies, we get to know that she is captured by Marisa- her mother and a character which we cannot truly say is good or bad.

Thus, kickstarts the two-premiere of His Dark Materials Season 3, where Lyra and Will are in a constant tussle to look for each other and escape the realities they are a part of. As we see, Asriel’s war against the Authority blooming much larger and wider than we last met him, all he needs is Will and the Knife, but finding Lyra to reach Will also becomes an essential and difficult factor in his expedition as he is still in denial of Lyra being the second Eve.

His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 1 and 2 Ending

His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 2 ends in a rather twisted way. Will ends up finding Lyra. However, while trying to escape with Lyra from Marisa’s prison, Marisa gets into Will’s head by constantly asking him about his mother which deviates him from concentrating and makes the knife break (yes, thus, the name of the episode). This means Will is useless to Marisa, who tries to shoot him but, Lyra comes in the way. Taken over by the love for her daughter, she asks Lyra to move which is when a tooth-fairy size help from Asriel saves them.

The fairy asks the two to go to Asriel but, Lyra denies heading out of the cave where they are attacked but, Lorek saves them. Lyra and Will escape through a portal which they are unable to close properly and the fairy follows them too. Lord Asriel enters the scene a little too late and only finds an unconscious Marisa lying on the floor inside the cave. The episode ends with Will and Lyra lighting a campfire and sleeping side by side, wondering what they are going to do next.

His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 1 and 2: Final Thoughts

The premiere episodes of His Dark Materials Season 3 just go on to re-familiarise us with the existing storyline and character arcs. Apart from the Subtle Knife breaking at the end, there aren’t many twists and turns but, the makers just try to get us into the flow of the show again which is well-appreciated. Instead of dropping revelation after revelation, the first two episodes have just the right pace and ending to keep us hooked. The actors, once again, are tremendously well with Ruth Wilson downright stealing the show.

You can stream His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 1 and 2 now on HBO Max.
